    jon-monon retires

I see I am almost to my 5100th post, which is what Robin did during his time at the-gauge. Since I can't compare my accomplishments to Robins, I've decided to retire jon-monon from the gauge. I shall never post again as jon-monon or use the name elsewhere. Goodbye cruel world!

    Scratchbuilt detail parts

Finally, you can find a bunch of brass tools I made, most given to Paul Templar years back, in a thread in the gems.

Shelves and contents, as well as machine tools posted on another thread are all scratch made:

Most of the junk in the back of this truck was scratch built, including the model T engine block to the left.

    HO scale machine shop

Before placing it, you might dry brush some grinder dust under and behind where the wheels will be:

    HO scale machine shop

The grinder itself can be formed by chucking up some plastic rod 8 or 10 scale inches in diameter and forming it using a small file. If you want it less chunky looking, you might make it four parts; two wheels, the motor and a shaft cut or fine metal rod (brass) or wire. The four parts would be...

    HO scale machine shop

Glen asked me to demonstrate how I made the grinder in my earlier post in this thread. I think I said it was plastic, but it was actually brass. Plastic would be easier for most people.

    Scratchbuilt detail parts

This was done ages ago and entered in a gauge photo contest. Jugs of shine, still and instruments are scratch built from brass. I gave away the still but have the other parts somewhere.

Here are some small wooden crates I did for my lazy (_!_)'ed LPB to sit on:

    Scratchbuilt detail parts

Nice work! If you want to make open or battered barrels, you might try thin metal. I used brass shim stock. Fred did a howto using the jig I made him for "O" scale. This can be done easily in any scale from N on up. The jig can also be made from a softer material than the aluminum block I used...

Sad time for us all, Pete. So many people knew him, loved him, and learned from him.

    what's your favorite engine?

Very well 'splained, Fred, and your last statement is the often overlooked key to happiness in the hobby. When it looks good to you, it is good.

    what's your favorite engine?

That's cool stump. Your description might make more sense to someone. Jeff, I would beware of advice from anyone who is against any scale. They likely (think they) are on some level above us, and are not likely to enjoy or want you to enjoy the hobby.
