    Another Question About Cutting Foam

The typical steel-bristled brush is sometimes a little too coarse and/or too big for this, but if you go to the plumbing department of a home improvement store, you can get smaller, brass-bristled brushes (I think they use them to clean pipe thread or something) that work really well.

    Another Question About Cutting Foam

If you have a soldering gun (gun, not iron) with a removable tip - mine is held in with a couple of set screws - take out the tip and replace it with a loop of heavy bare copper wire, 10-12 AWG or so. The wire can be bent into the shape of the groove you want to cut. Keep the wire length as...

    Bauchman 2-6-6-2 Problem Please Help

You might try posting on the Bachman web site (http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/board/) if you haven't already.

Lionel Strang vs Allen Gartner Feeder wire length

Somewhere above someone mentioned BARE (ohmigod) wires. Think about it, aren't the rails themselves the same as bare wires? (Only they're on top where things can fall or be set on them to cause shorts, where the wires are usually on the bottom!) :D

    Simple Wiring Idea

Better? It's certainly an alternative method, but like a lot of other things one method being "better" than another depends on one's personal preferences and experience.

    trackplan ogden shops ??

There's a web site that has aerial/satellite photos, http://terraserver.microsoft.com, covering most, if not all, of the USA. If you can find a similar site covering the Calgary area, you might find something helpful.

    Atlas Turnout Alternative

You could consider getting manual, vs. remote, switches for at least the more accessible locations - from a quick check it looks like the cost of a remote is approx 50% more than the equivalent manual. There are some neat ways out there to control manual switches.

    Wooden match sticks?

Watch out for the waxy coating some of them seem to have - it doesn't glue or stain worth a darn!

    Styrofoam Grade/Riser

Anyone ever try (or think about trying) using foam for the "spline" method? You would have to come up with a way to handle curves, but it seems like it would be an easy way to control the exact grade, vertical easements, etc., and would give a more solid foundation for your track than the foam...

    Benchwork constuction for foam??

I'd put at least 1/4 plywood under it to prevent misplaced elbows, etc, from going all the way through the foam.

To solder or not to solder

A more "real world" case, 48in diameter circle and a 100deg F change, produces nearly the same result of .020in. BUT wouldn't the effect of temperature and humidity changes on the wood components in the benchwork, etc., still be a bigger problem?

I doubt if the info you need would be posted. Try going to a "real" store with a ruler in you pocket (or just buy one - they can't be that much).

Why not just do the whole thing without insulated joiners, then cut gaps where you need them?

    Track expansion & warping

The coeffiecient of thermal expansion for nickel silver is about 15ppm/degC - which means SOLID (no gaps) piece of nicel silver that is 8 ft long at 32F would expand by 0.072 in at 122F. Figure it out, guys, it's not the temperature, it's the humidity.

Is there still a call for a DCC forum

Why - just because 22 (at last count) said yes? You could get that many votes for almost anything! I agree with CN1.

How about using that Ailene's Tacky stuff instead of white glue - I know it dries kind of flexible.
