    Eight Bells, I stand relieved

I'm confused. I don't get to visit here often anymore, has the Gauge (Zealot) been sold again? Does Peter still own it? What is crowdgatherers? Have they been in the picture since Peter bought the Gauge? I'm very sorry to see so many talented modelers leave, I hope they will indeed still...

A Problem That is Becoming Magnified

Great thread. I too have trouble seeing details, and have been suffering in silence. Nice to have a +support" group :) I had surgery in both eyes for retina detachment. Mt right eye still has a clamp on it to hold it to a specific shape. The vision in this eye is poor. This was 11...

    HO Scale Operational Hi-Rail

Probably a stupid idea, but if the main problem with a resistor to drop the voltage is heat, perhaps you could mount the resistor in front of the vehicles grill, like a pneumatic cylinder. Or represent an air tank?

How do you make the Flageways in Crossings?

I run an nmra track gauge thru the pavement, followed by a freight car truck. I find doing it in two steps results in a neater job. The gauge removes most of what needs to be removed, and the bottom edge keeps the material level. However not enough matrial is removed, so the freight truck...

    Beeg Boy...

Now that's a beautiful locomotive, not at all surprising tho from Doc Wayne. CN nutbar, I really like the paint job on the bridge of your turntable. Nice work!

    Sanding facilities

Hi Russ, yeah, I love the transistion era. I just love steam. But I also realize that, in my experience anyway, model diesels outperform model steam. And with a rather tight radius helix leading to east end staging on my layout, I use diesels east of Blakesly Yard, and steam west of it. A...

    Sanding facilities

Thanks Charlie, that's a cool picture. I was wondering what that was on the right. I saw on the roof what looks like a panel that might open. Pretty sure it's not a solar panel(!) I hate to show my stupidity and think the sand might have been loaded thru that hatch. Just too wierd. Ah...

    Sanding facilities

Wow, this thread got real busy today! Russ, I didn't mean that locos don't need sand anymore, just that the open bin would be out of use and dry sand would be delivered in covered hoppers, and blown to the towers, as Andrew mentioned. My railroad is not very firmly fixed in a particular era...

    Sanding facilities

Thanks to everyone who has replied. Yes, stokers were absoulutely needed and I think Pete has stated the logical conclusion to the various thoughts, manual labor was sufficient depending on volume required. I really appreciate the discussion as I feel I can model a sand bin and drying shed...

    Sanding facilities

Hi Pete, Nice library! And awesome models! That is the first mention I think I've seen of an open ended bin. And dump trucks make sense, but unfortunately not the kind of sense I want to make. I prefer Wayne's manual unloading of a gondola. (Thanks Wayne!) I just have no idea if that...

    Sanding facilities

Thanks for the reply PuddleJumper, I think that's probobly what happens now, with the sand being delivered dry in covered hoppers and sent directly to the towers, eliminating (perhaps) the drying process. But I neglected to mention I'm thinking infrastructure from the 30's or 40's, as it might...

    Sanding facilities

I'm hoping to pick somebodys brain about loco sanding facilities. We've all seen models which include a bin for holding sand, out in the open, with a shed right next to it, for drying the sand and equipment to move the sand to towers for use. The track used to bring in cars of sand is next to...

    Uncoupler magnets: Your experience?

Yeah, the magnet wire has a coat of varnish on it. It's a bit of a pain to remove.

    Uncoupler magnets: Your experience?

Regarding building electromagnetic uncouplers: Many years ago I stumbled across an article in a very old Model Railroader, maybe from the late 50's. I'm sure you would never se this in recent mags! I built 12 of these for my yard, they work like a charm. It's been awhile and I forget some...

are non-magnetic wheels necessary with magnetic uncouplers?

Fred is correct, it is the axle which was steel, not the wheels. Was common on all Athearn cars, haven't bought any for a long time, don't know if that is still the case. But I most definately had problems. I used the ubder the ties magnets, and if a car had steel axles, you could not...

are non-magnetic wheels necessary with magnetic uncouplers?

The magnetic wheels will make it difficult or impossible to uncouple. The wheelsets will always be drawn to the center of the magnet. There are many brands of wheelsets to choose from, I've used mostly Kadee but then its been a long time since I've bought any. Others will chime in.

    New--Wary of Mistake

Digitrax decoders have a 9 pin in line socket and come with a cable that is already plugged into it, which terminates in the 8 pin plug you need. I've not had any trouble with them. They make that cable in two lenghts, 2 1/2" and 5", I think.
