I'm as about as far away from a "joiner" as anyone can be, but several years ago I joined the Railroad & Locomotive Historical Society, and have found a very classy source of Prototype info in our hobby. They publish one of the classiest magazines twice a year (June and December) called simply "Railroad History". It's full of prototype history and storys that have been so helpfull to me in the hobby of model railroading.
I strongly recommend that all you modellers give these people a look. You won't be sorry.
