Looks like some kind of varnish on the model. You people have experience with acrylic varnish on paper models, the kind like for miniature painting? I fear that I will soak and destroy the paper surface with it but I don't know.

I am currently building this very model. Will post a build thread for it soon (along with other models from the last days)

Try a spray acrylic varnish. I use Krylon artists matt and gloss. 1 can of spray will do several models. To avoid saturation of the paper use light "mist" coats.
