Signage question

Set in 1907. Looking for ballpark fare info for signage posted outside of ticket window. I found a reference to 3.5 cents per mile in 1911 on the ACL, SAL and Southern. Seemed reasonable, until I ran a few prices and found that the prices for riding trains was very expensive. Am I wrong? Thanks.

P.S. Looking at prices, got me thinking. What would a passenger train crews pay be?

I found in 1871 the Toronto Grey and Bruce charged $4.50 from Owen Sound to Toronto, a distance of 122 miles. This is 3.6 cents/miles.
There's another note in the book that excursion fares were about 1.5 cents/mile, half the regular fare. (From Narrow Gauge through the Bush)
