Chris, thank you for the article - finally I understand the difference between interurbans and city 'trams'.
Here in Switzerland 'Trams' are common in almost every bigger city. Apart from that we have true interurban lines, too. But traditionally they all are narrow gauge - meter gauge, to be exact.
The interurbans also transported freight and occasionally still do. They didn't have freight cars, instead they transported standard freight cars on special trucks.
