I wanted to use the real window as a texture. Unfortunately the shape did not match, probably due to the camera angle or lens distortion or a change in the plans of the real set. So I tried to replicate the look in Corel with a series of gradients:

It did not turn out too bad. :)

DANG! I goofed up big time. I was wondering why the window position did not match. Another look at the original blueprints revealed: I made the launch tube stall too wide! The original is 16', somehow I made them 5' wider... So back to the drawing bord to shorten all areas. That means the floor plan must be revised completely, too.

You had made the comment quite a while ago, about how the Viper MK-VII was considerably wider than that of the MK-II. So, why not leave it "as-is". That way, it can accommodate the Viper MK-VII.

Yes, you are correct. I checked the dimensions again and found out that something else was in the way:

launch bay 1-50-toleranz0,3.gif

The inner wall design is too close together. The wing tips of the Mk VII don't get through.

To solve this issue I decided to alter the walls and remove the piece:

As a side effect the Mk. III will now fit inside, too:

It is a tight fit but it will do. ;)

Something often talked about but rarely built (in paper): The Maintenance Platform.

ladder.jpg

This is based on an RE Atkinson B1 Maintenance stand, a vintage version from the 1970s with a custom platform to accomodate the design of the prop. It is funny to see the pulling handle with towing eye just leaning against the rail in many scenes! :D

Some had a railing, others didn't.

The platform is located above the turbo lasers. Naturally, it is not supposed to hit them! ;)

Since the platform consists of flat pieces which wil be laminated to card I'm designing the model a bit differently. First I have traced the blueprint of the B1 platform and created a side view at 1/1 scale. The side view was grouped. Then I rotated the plans and used the top view to create the top platform and the steps. I could have done everything in Corel in 2D but since the angle of the railing has to be adapted I thought making it in 3D was a bit easier. In addition, the 3D view makes it easier to see where the diagonal struts go and how they are attached. All components which are ready for the final model are duplicated and pushed to the right side where I will finalize the draft.
