I have 4 spectrum engines and the directions advise asking the hobby shop guy how to lube.

What is up with that, Why wont Bachman tell you how?

I have a shay, climax and a berks and some other steamer I don't know what it is.

I basically spray them with wd 40 and then some 3 in one oil.

I let them set a day or two in a paper towel.

Is there a better way or product to use/

As to grease I am not about to open them up for that.

If it isn't greased when assembled that is to bad, I will lose parts and mess them up in some way to be sure.

Your comments please.

Gil,

With lube on engines as small as HO... less is definitely more. Even though the siderods of a prototype Shay may be dripping with oil, we need to apply it sparingly, since too much can attract dust and dirt and gum up everything.

I apply oil to joints maybe once a year, with the pointy end of a pin. On my steamers, I use Neo-Lube which can be painted on with a brush. I have yet to open anything for gear grease, except my very old Pacific, which got a complete overhaul when I got it.

As for a spray with WD-40 and 3-in-1... that may be a good approach for storage, as long as the oils are plastic safe.

Hope that helps.
