Hi I'm Strick67, an artist and 3D modeller. Elsewhere on the web I'm known as Dinoreplicas (Twitter, Artstation) and Tarnyloo73 (BlenderArtists, RPF).

I have to confess I'm not really a traditional modelmaker or collector but partly by accident I've become a budding papercraft designer. A short while ago, I noticed that Blender3D came with a papercraft exporter so I made and released a free papercraft version of my 3D Pterosaur to compliment (and promote) a non-free project.

The model was noticed on Deviantart by @Revell-Fan who started this thread here on Zealot.

So here I am, I quite like papercraft and I've admired card models in the past but I never thought I'd be contributing to the medium one day. I'm looking forward to checking out the work here and picking up a few tips and ideas along the way.

I do hope to create more paper card model kits in the near future, some may be for commercial ventures but anything I provide for free I'll post about here on Zealot.

welcome to Zealot and thank you for posting this introduction!

Your first model turned out beautifully. I know what it means to become a paper model designer. If someone had told me I would make my own models some day I wouldn't have believed that. But here I am.

I have started model building as a kid, like most of us. The Revell models were the first (and only) ones I assembled and when I learned that they had released models from my favourite TV show "Battlestar Galactica" I truly became a "Revell-Fan" (so much for the nick ). When I was trying to complete my collection I found Martin Saenger's Thunderfighter from my other favourite TV show, "Buck Rogers". I was completely blown away because I had never seen anything that remotely matched in quality and craftmanship. This was the first paper model I built after a long time - it literally opened my eyes and I was hooked ever since. After a while I thought it was time to give something back to the community. So I started to make my own models. The first attempts were pretty crude, everything was hand-drawn without CG support. Then I encountered SketchUp which has since become my weapon of choice. I immediately discarded all hand-drawn plans and revised them. The result was my very first paper model, the Colonial Landram.

Welcome aboard, and Thanks for the Pterosaur plans. I'm an old hand at building models from sticks, tissue, plastic, resin, brass, tin, and steel. But a relative newbie to papercraft, as I have just started back making paper models after a several year break. I won't do the best build of your plans, but I will do it.

Howdy @Strick67 good to see you and welcome to Zealot...also a Blenderhead on Blenderartist ( you can recognize me by my avatar) and sometimes Model Designer...though mostly just amassing a ton of models and very little designing.

I do wish they would take up the slack and work on the paper model plugin a bit more it is still lacking in some areas..
But welcome to Zealot and enjoy the hobby, as always...If you have any questions Just Ask, someone is bound to know or have ideas to point in the right direction!!

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome and the kind words. Any paper model advice I may need, this is clearly the place.
In the interests of transparency I have to state that I'm looking to generate more income from my 'stuff' in the future. However I also like to share some things for free too. It might be a bit of a balancing act for me to show stuff here without plugging other interests but I think I can manage.

@Revell-Fan - Hey it's your fault I'm here! I checked out your Deviantart gallery, science fiction seems highly suited to paper models, especially spaceship designs with their geometric shapes. I'm a bit of a Star Wars nerd myself (OT only I'm oldschool). Wouldn't mind making a virtual Millennium falcon someday that works in a game engine, complete with full interior I can walk around. That would be a big job to do well though and I'd have to find the time.

@spaceagent-9 - Always love to hear from fellow dinosaur fans, I'm thinking of converting a couple of my dinosaur skulls to card models (again, if I can find the time).

@micahrogers - Good luck with the build, you'll do great, I messed up my first one and had to re-print 2 of the 3 pages. Paper modelling seems to be a fairly forgiving medium as long as you've got spare ink, paper ans patience .

@zathros - Thank you.

@Rhaven Blaack - Thanks, my 3D print oriented work over the past 2 yrs has been for my commercially available models so I don't think I can show any of it here. I'm busy with other stuff at the moment but I hope to do more card model design as soon as possible.

Thanks @Gandolf50, to be honest I don't interact much on BA, I mostly start a 'WIP' or 'finished projects' thread and bomb it with images. I will look out for you though. If you like collecting free models I have 3 on Blendswap I added a few years ago, just look for the user 'Tarnyloo'.

Regarding the plugin, have you considered contacting the author? My needs are simple and I just found it convenient to produce the flat shapes, I could probably have managed without it by just exporting a decent UV map but it did make the process quicker so I used it. The plugin is written in python so one of us could maybe update it. Gotta say though, my middle aged-attention span hates wallowing through other people's code so I'm probably not the guy for the job .

It works for my purposes because I just use it as a tool to create the raw elements, the bulk of the work is done in 2D software. I refine the hand painted texture in Krita and vector adjustment/layout is done in illustrator.

PS search on Blendswap failed...what's the name of one of the blends?

Here's the Blendswap links. Nothing spectacular, just the stuff I made when I was familarising myself with Blender's poly modelling workflow (I was making the jump from Lightwave and Cinema4D). Managed a basic rig on the Dolphin though.
