gigantic tos enterprise scratch build

It's really something, but I see no texture at all on this? Is it not finished? It is awesome.

It's not finished, yet. Steve got it painted last week and is supposed to start on the defector grid and decals this week. When it's finished it's going in the Museum of Science Fiction in Washington, DC. I donated money way-back-when to build it so I get my name on the plaque as a sponsor.

Is that "our" Steve? I thought it wasn't finished, how could something so awesome without the texture. This is really going to be a model of models!! :)

i think that the 3 foot tos enterprise model that polar lights put out was great, spinning nacelles and everything, the 2-2 1/2 foot long tmp enterprise, and Ron's resized is fantastic too, that 6 foot long tmp was too much. but a 6 foot long hard replica of the tos enterprise is one of those needs, in the jungian subconscious, a hole that needs to be filled. i remember in sanfransico near golden gate park there used to be a jet in a small park between the roads,a couple of swings, but you could climb inside and it had dials and , well it was just fun. nothing beats being able to go and see it, i hope they allow supervised photographing and feeling the hum of the engines. its just too much and you know someone is going to go bigger than that too! 22 feet long? 50 feet long?

do you know how long and what the scale is bgt01?
Steve says the model is basically 6 feet long, which would put it somewhere near 1:163 scale. Those little figures were supposed to be small 3-d figures of donors who gave over $100 to the project. That had problems so he was going to switch to paper printouts of the people. Then Steve found out the scale made it impossible to see facial detail. The last he said, the figures are now photoetch figures painted up. Each $100+ donor has a figure assigned to them and there will be a chart on display that shows where each crewperson is located. The little rooms are made out of paper and photoetch.

According to Steve, this model will be smooth like the original Enterprise model. The only texture will be some light deflector lines on the saucer (drawn in pencil) and the decals.

I watched TOS Star Trek when it first came on TV and we were the only people I knew who had a color TV (which was a piece of crap, the tube went Red within a year, just after warranty. I could not tell from back then if it was smooth or not, but always thought it was. As I got older, and saw so many drawings, and fan Renders, I assumed it had panel lines.

You learn something new every day!! Thanks "bgt01". :)

thats kind of a cool way to list the donators!

It's cool that everyone who donated gets a mention. I would have helped anyway, but the idea that my name will be on a plaque near an Enterprise in a museum sold me immediately! I'll take that scrap of Trek connection. ;)
