The Galactican fleet will soon be enriched by Dr Zee's antigravity ship (the Galactican ship of lights, so-to-speak). I know, it's a ship from Galactica 1980, but it gives me the opportunity to practise texturing curved surfaces and it is a nice design from the guys of Universal Hartland. Fortunately, their design work was not as bad as the series :mrgreen: !
This ship is similar to the light ships seen in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (mixed with some elements from E.T.'s mothership) which makes me believe that some of the designers were involved in the making the movie. In CE the VFX were made by Douglas Trumbull, John Dykstra's mentor; it is highly probable that Trumbull would have won the Oscar for VFX for CE if he hadn't lend his equipment and facilities to Dykstra who then was able to build the motion control systems for Star Wars; another example of how an apprentice surpasses his master :twisted: .
Unfortunately there are not many pics available. I based everything on screenshots from the series and two tiny pictures from Ken Larson's site which reveal the true Galactica style colouring (in the series the surface was completely blacked out). The panel structure was improvised and could have been more authentic if I had had better refs. So it looks a bit like a starfleet vessel from above. BTW, the black twin dots on the surface are maneuvring thrusters and no phaser emitters ;-) . The final model can be built with or without landing struts. Modeling is complete, I'm now unfolding it and making the instructions. Stay tuned!
