    The Canadian

With respect, a consist from 60 years ago is totally not relevant to his question, which is about the make-up of the train today. The consist of the train stayed pretty consistent through the 1970s, up until VIA took over. In those days the standard consist leaving Toronto was a baggage-dorm...

    What is a MU car

Generally "MU Car" refers to a self-propelled passenger coach, usually electric, that can run in multiple sets. Similar types of equipment would be Rail Diesel Cars (RDCs) and DMU (Diesel multiple units). MU stands for multiple unit and refers the the ability of diesel and electric engines to...

    Weekly Photo Fun 3-27/4-02

I notice that none of the cars in the photo have any sort of numbering or markings whatsoever. Kinda hard to actually use those in freight service and actually route them anywhere.

    Why Red?

I believe it was because the brownish pigment used for the paint was very cheap and common. They didn't quite have the range of artificial pigments we have now, and whatever natural pigment (iron oxide maybe??) that was used to get this colour was inexpensive. By the time steel boxcars came...

My point is the original number should be patched over. It currently has two numbers on the cab.

    Weekly Photo Fun 2-6/2-12

Why does this engine have two numbers? If your L&A renumbered it, the old DRGW number needs to be completely removed. Either that or keep the original number but put your railroad's reporting marks next to it on the cab.

    dual operation of turnouts

Eric, You said you're using motor type machines. Are they stall-motors that stay on continuously with power, like a Tortoise? How is the DPDT wired, like a track reversing section? If the answer to both is yes, the switches could very easily be chained together in that case (you wouldn't...

    leasing company name

Note that if those are the reporting marks you're considering, CLSX=Cargill (Salt division), and I've never seen a 5-letter reporting mark like CLLPX. I like the name, but stay with CLLX for the reporting mark.

    Track Warrants

On the shortline railroad in my city they have a "paddle". It's literally a piece of a cut down canoe paddle with the railway's initials engraved into it. Whoever has possesion of the paddle has control of the line. If there is a second train on the line (which is pretty rare but can happen) the...

    Need help with operations

There are several ways you could set up a simple waybill system for your layout. Make a car card for each car you have, noting it's type, roadname or reporting marks and number. Make a pocket on the car card that you can slip a waybill into. Then make a bunch of waybills for your...

Algoma Central Railway - Agawa Camp Car

The Algoma Central was purchased by the WC in 1995, and CN took over the WC in 2001, so they now operate the line. All the original AC engines went to WC. Some of them are still around, but only in full WC colours. There's no engines left in the original AC colours. After WC took over in 1995...

What type of road bed do you use?

Our layout is located in an insulated (kinda) but unheated (except when we're actually there) quonset hut - so it behaves basically like a really big shed. With the heat and humidity swings that are possible out there between frigidly cold winter and boiling hot summer we don't want to even risk...

What type of road bed do you use?

I don't have my own layout at this time, but at my club the answer is none/other. Roadbed for visible trackage is mostly spline with handlaid track laid directly on the spline. No cork or foam roadbed. And absolutely no homasote or other pressed paper type products.

    Pics of Waterloo Central Railway

There's a single local freight to Elmira in the evening that uses the branchline. The branch from Kitchener to Elmira is actually owned by the region, and the mainline from Stratford to Georgetown is owned by CN and leased by GEXR. Looks like they've been doing some repainting up there. That...

I got rejected from Model Railroader

csxengineer: no offense, but the photos could use some improvement. (Not trying to dump on you, just point out where they can use some improvement/practice.) First photo is massively out of focus in the foreground, and unlevel. Second photo also out of focus in foreground, and lighting isn't...

corner Gas tv show & trains

I have seen shots in the show before of a train actually passing, and it is a CP line. As mentioned before the red "Canada" hoppers can be seen on both CN and CP, since there are some assigned to each road. Of course you will very rarely ever see "CPWX" cars on CN or "CNWX" cars on CN...

    What's your point?

I don't really have anything myself right now, being in a tiny basement apartment right now. Someday... At my model club, it's all of the above. Mainline through trains, lots of locals, the main yard can keep two crews busy and there's some passenger ops. (although we're not running the main...
