Weekly Foto Phun Week of Nov. 2 2007

The engine terminal is especially crowded today with several Penn Central and Chessie units awaiting assignment. All C&O and PC units were custom painted by me.

Weekly Foto Phun Week of Nov. 2 2007

Greetings all, I've been looking around this site for a while and thought I'd get in on the fun. Great photos everyone. Hope you like mine. Here at Logan Yard an SD20-2 and SD35 are earning there keep pulling a cut of grain cars from the yard.

    Paint removal question....

Greetings all, I'm in the process of stripping some shells and here is my situation. I'm using Castrol Super Clean but I'm not getting the results I expected. It doesn't seem to work well on factory paint. Now let me say that this stuff is remarkably fast at removing paint that has been...

    Google Earth

I like google earth for the major cities, but they don't seem to have as much clear coverage other than that. A site that I use a lot is Yahoo maps. Just type in the town you want to see and click on the "satellite" (sp?) button and you can get any location clear as day. The only drawback is...

    srriping paint from locomotive shell

I would recommend trying a product called EZ Lift Off. It's made specifically for plastics and works well. I have several shells that had multiple coats of paint and it took it off quite well without damaging the shell. It also is great for removing factory decals. Just a little bit of this...

    Lift Bridge

Nice lift bridge. It looks almost exactly like mine. As far as scenery goes, I plan on covering up the hinges with some shrubbery that way when the bridges are lifted the shrubbery can be smooshed a bit and bounce back when the bridge is lowered. Just a suggestion you may want to think about...

    Duckunders and lift outs

My advice would be to use a hinged lift bridge. That is what I use on my layout and it works great. Sure it takes a little more effort to align and maintain alignment of the tracks but it's the way to go. It's been pretty easy to remember the bridge beacuse it is only down when the layout is...

Should it have its own runaround track?

Either plan would work fine, but IMO it would be a lot more interesting to have to use the SP siding for runaround moves. In this case the industrial railroad would contact the SP dispatcher and the dispatcher would give the industrial railroad a block of time to occupy the main. The switcher...

Caulk vs Woodland Scenics Foam Tack Glue

I use carpenters glue from Home Depot or Lowes. I've used regular Elmers glue as well but I prefer the carpenters glue because IMO it holds the roadbed to the foam better.

Looking to buy a digital camera

IMHO, if you want a really good camera that won't break the bank you cannot beat a Canon Power Shot. Mine is a Power Shot A540 6 megapixels. My father has been in the photography and printing business as long as I can remember and Canon has been his brand of choice. Tyler

    Question on Pick-ups and Set-outs

You are indeed thinking like a real railroader. I never worked for the railroad but a friend of mine did and we operated his layout just like the real thing or at least as close as possible. If I was out of line with a switching move he let me know and showed me how to do it properly. I learned...

    Question on Pick-ups and Set-outs

Gary, First I want to say that your layout looks real nice so far. Ahhhhh switching. My absolute favorite part of the hobby and the focus of my own layout. The steps that you listed seem pretty logical to me, but I will tell you that it will change more times than you can count as you go...
