    First Ballasting Photos

Play-Doh, Looks good for a first attempt, however, You will be much happier with the end result if you paint your track before ballasting. Now is the time to do it before you progress too far with the ballast. This includes painting the ties and the track itself. You should consult pictures of...

    layout progress & engine pics

UP SD40-2, Great tutorial you have there, thanks for sharing. BTW, there is a special feature on SD-40-2's in the June issue of Locomotive by Trains magazine. Thought you might be interested. Keep up the good work! Stuart

Acrylic paint for ties OK ?

I have to echo what Gary stated, I have not had any trouble with acrylics sticking to the ties. Tamiya paint is a bit thinner than Polly S, so that may be a concern, but Polly S has always worked well for me. Also, Liquitex {sold in art stores}, is an acrylic that works very well and is...

    Sergent couplers

KCS, Please keep us posted on the sergent couplers performance. I think they will look superb with the cut levers and no out of scale uncoupling pin. Thanks in advance. Stuart

    Around the docks...

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Lester, I am not a member of any club - It is just my 2 foot x 8 foot switching layout. It is built so that I can expand at either end. At the moment I am working on an extension {2ft x 4 ft } that will allow me to expand it to 2ft x 12 ft. In a way it is a...

    After midnight

Kurt, Thanks for sharing your pavement technique. I am adding another 2x4 section to my switching layout that will have quite a bit of street trackage. I might try out your method as my previous method of using styrene is a bit tedious to install around switches and I have been looking into...

    After midnight

Kurt, Very nice work, I am particulary impressed with your street trackage. What material did you use for your streets? Under that street lamp the road takes on an ultra realistic texture-top notch modeling all around. Stuart

    Sergent couplers

I will be changing to Sergent in the near future, as well as going to semi- scale wheelsets {much to the dismay of my track laying gang}. Since I am a dyed in the wool shelf layout guy, reaching them to uncouple will not be a problem. I have never really cared for the Kadee uncoupling ramps wich...

    First Weathering Attempt

Kd6dxa, Not bad for a first attempt, however, here are a few constructive observations- On your ATSF boxcar I would recommmend that you be a little more aware of your chalk blending so that you achieve a bit more consistency. Your black chalk has vertical streaks on the left side, and...

    Just another pic

Kurt, That is one sharp looking switcher you have there. I have always thought that is one of the nicest paint designs any road has ever devised. I look forward to seeing more shots of your layout as well. Stuart

    reefer madness...

UP SD40-2, Thanks for the kind words, and don't hesitate to ask if you ever have any questions on the rust technique. That reefer was actually a botched weathering job that had sat dorment for a couple of years in my scrap box. It seemed a perfect candidate to experiment on, and thankfully it...
