    Rail

I'm certainly no expert, but I've been advised by many with experience that brass rail requires considerably more cleaning to reliably run.

how to scratchbuild a water tower

Shamus, you're good for my humilty. I really like the clean, neat appearance of your scratchbuilding. Perhaps one of my later towers will look more like this one (hoping to someday be in Susan's league) [This message has been edited by Biggerhammer (edited 04-19-2001).]

    Mistakes made

It was a coworker's Canon Powershot S100. The camera is better than those pictures would suggest, I was hurrying to get such photos as I could before the battery went entirely dead. In a week or so I hope to have more pictures (and more useful pictures) of the bridge up.

And the pictures! I finally have a few pictures of the bridge that I spoke about a few replies ago. I had planned to post more but the camera ran out of batteries so these are all the photos I have. http://www.angelfire.com/nh/taviscai/train/model.html

    Futuristic modeling of railroads

A few thoughts: On the 'Preservationist' vs 'Fantasist' dilemma: depending on modeler and layout, either could be true. I'm a newbie here but my current layout is a fantasy (1900s technology set in an idealized Iowa with a made-up railroad company). My next layout will be strictly preservation...

    Futuristic modeling of railroads

I've followed this post for a while- SciFi and model trains are a great match! Science fiction has frequently led to invention- Heinlein invented the waterbed this way (though he thought it would have to be drained daily) and fax machines were born on Star Trek. Of course there have probably...

how to scratchbuild a water tower

The next note in the continuing saga of my water tower- The barrel on top is the tough part so far. After a few false starts and a few wasted feet of stripwood, I've settled on the following method: I took a used juice can as a form, wrapped two rubberbands around it and put 2.5" strips of...

Shamus, I'm new to the forum but I've heard more than a few comments about your miniatures- in particular Susan. The picture link is broken in the post. Would you mind reposting a few pictures of your miniatures? Thank you, for the pictures, the advice and above all for helping quite a few...

how to scratchbuild a water tower

Shamus, I can only wish that it were so cheap and available here... I paid (for basswood) $.26 per strip, and stained it myself. (I've not spent sterling for years but I think that $.26 is around 18p). I really look forward to your photos. They always give me a lot of encouragement that such is...

how to scratchbuild a water tower

Hello all- I'm scratchbuilding an open-topped water tower in HO scale. I had originally just wanted to build a plastic kit but it looked thoroughly cheesy so I just used the kit as a template for the wooden one that I am building. My quandry is this- how to make the tank? I'm using 1/8x1/16...

    shamus' ballast article

Hm. A question for all- I am a beginner, linving in railroad-sparse New Hampshire. My memories of prototype rail are from quite a few years back and I recall the ballast there to be rough (frieght run through suburbs in California, 1980ish). How rough/smooth should the ballast be? I'm not asking...

Ooh. Long straight stretch before going onto a bridge, you tell me now. I think I've just gotten a step 4 vs step 10 experience I have a curved bridge (scratchbuilt). It's 22" radius and has no railings at all (just a two inch drop into 'water'). Now that the whole shebang is glued, nailed...
