    Great Northern G-3 4-8-0 Mastadon

Thanks Ray, It's hard to show the detail because I have to shrink the pictures to post them. I have a Nikon Coolpix 5700 digital camera with 5.24 MP and usually take pictures on "Fine" which works out to 2500 Pixels wide. To post pictures here you have to shrink them down to 640 wide, so...

Thomas the Tank Engine HO trains.

Andrew, My grand-daughter, Abby, is almost six now but when she was around three years old she loved running a pair of LifeLike N-Scale SD-7's in Great Northern on a small test track I had set up in the computer room. Instead of racing the locos around at top speed, she loved to slow them...

    Great Northern G-3 4-8-0 Mastadon

The "Glacier Park" color scheme is very popular; green boiler, black cab with oxide red roof, silver smoke box and smoke box front. The Great Northern fleet was very handsome with most locos having Belpaire fireboxes, like the Pennsylvania locos. The other paint scheme was all black but...

    Great Northern Atlantic & Pacific

Whoops...just remembered. I have another Great Northern Pacific. This one is by LMB and it is a class H-4 4-6-2. I started to paint this one several years ago and can't finish until I get another airbrush and compressor. Westside models also made an H-4 Pacific but details differ...

    Great Northern G-3 4-8-0 Mastadon

Most railroads were happy with the 2-8-0 Consolidation. Great Northern used them too. Here is a brass Sunset F-1 2-8-0 Consolidation for comparison.

    Great Northern G-3 4-8-0 Mastadon

Hi guys, I was looking through my G/N Brass and wondered how many have ever heard of a Mastadon. Many old-timers know about them but this is mainly for the newer guys. This is a PFM-Samhongsa brass model of the unusual 4-8-0. In the USA I only know of G/N and Northern Pacific using this...

    Old Logging Photos

Camelot, Your 4th photo has "anybody know what this picture is about ?" Those three log cars look like they are lined up to roll the logs into the log pond. Most mills found it was easier to dump the logs in the water to float them to a chute and then pulled up into the mill.

    On30 looks very interesting.

Here is a picture of our little Christmas layout with my father-in-law holding my grandkids Jared and Abby. This is what I mentioned when I started this thread. This year it will have On30 equipment running on On30 track and more realistic scenery. The On30 trains will look a lot better...

Thomas the Tank Engine HO trains.

Guys, I have a 15 month old grandson and was thinking about getting started on a small "Thomas" layout to get him into trains. The way I work, he will be five years old before I get it done. Since Bachman has taken over production of the Hornby Thomas line the prices have really dropped...

    John English 2-8-2 Question

Ray, I had a John English Mikado back in the '50's and it had a one piece zamak tender that looked a lot like the one in your photo. It didn't have axle bearings like the Mantua locos and was a little wobbly going down the track.

    MDC RTR Shay

I wonder if the factory-built MDC Shay is as noisy as the one I built. I put NWSL axles with gears in it but it's still noisy. Is there a fix for the noise?

    On30 looks very interesting.

You'd like to see the Bumblebee loco pulling the yellow passenger coaches. If that is the case, your best bet would be to purchase a passenger set, and a separate bumblebee locomotive. You see, for some completely inane reason, Bachmann does not offer the combine or the observation coach...

    On30 looks very interesting.

Shamus, Yes, that's what I'm looking for. I put one of those MDC Shays together years ago and it came out very nice. It was very noisy. The gear teeth on the axles were terrible, causing a very lumpy action. I deburred the gear teeth as best as I could with an exacto knife but...

    On30 looks very interesting.

Hi Jon, I also found a Wholesaletrains.com that has the 2-6-0 Bumble Bee for $74.89, the Shay for around $140 and a trolly for $27. The site is very hard to navigate and find anything. I really like that Bumble Bee paint job as we want a bright looking train at Christmas. Trouble is...

    brain storm for g scale

Most of these small 4-stroke engines put out power in the 9,500 to 12,000 range on a propeller. I would still recommend a centrifigul clutch because you sure don't want any load on the engine when trying to start it. When they first start up they can be a little balky 'til they reach...
