    Walthers Mountain Lumber Sawmill

I was messing around with Atlas Right track last night (what a pain) and I noticed that it would take almost a 4x8 layout just to model the Mountain Lumber company complex with all off its outbuildings with track and the unloading crane. I was hoping to use it, but I'm going to find another...

    Home made trees...

Russ makes a good point. Searching for your the type of tree in your layout's location is a good idea also. For example, he was talking about Pine trees being uniform. In his area they are, but here in the South they could be like the Elm tree with branches growing in all diffrent directions.

    Home made trees...

That is a good point but after the trees have turned they can be uniformly orange. http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/984876/2/istockphoto_984876_autumn_orange_foliage_blue_sky.jpg

    For Sumpter250

I saw in the sawmill construction thread that you have a detailed bait and tackle shop. I would love to see some pictures of it. I'm sure there are others here that would like to see it also.

    Dummy Locos

Kevinkrey, Ask anything you want. I don't mind anyone asking anything they want in threads I have started. Thanks for all the replies. Doctorwayne, those models look great. I just want to detail and weather a loco to get a feel for it. I don't just want a shell for this project because if...

    Dummy Locos

What company carries the best dummy locos? Most of the websites like Atlas and Bachmann are a pain to navigate and I couldn't find much on them. Athearn had a few. I was wondering if anyone used many dummy lococs on their layout and if they were as detailed as the power ones? I want to buy one...

    Great little railroad to model

I thought this might be an interesting shortline to model for those interested in modern operations but with a soft spot for the old locos like the RS-3. The Battenkill Railroad

    Beginners: Learn from my mistakes!

I've been reading for two years now and haven't even started a layout, just a few weathering attempts on freight cars. I think I may like reading about model railroading more than I would like actually doing it. I am not very patient. I am worried about building structures, laying track and...

    Father & Son's first layout

Hello, I work with a 9th grader that has Autism. It is a unique experience and challenge. I think a model railroad would be great for you and your son. I am a so called "armchair" modeler. I don't have the time or the space to build a layout right now, so I buy the occasional freight car and...

    Saw kits question

Does any company make a kit for the saw and equipment that are used in a sawmill, instead of the entire sawmill itself? Thanks, Clint

    Convince me

I am a disel guy. I like all the old logging layouts, but I want to do a modern one, realistic or not.

    Convince me

Thanks everyone for all of the replies. The main thing for me is making the layout look "real" and the challenge of doing that in a small place in HO is drawing me closer and closer to that scale. Sound is also an important aspect. I would go with a shelf layout but operations are not my thing...

    Convince me

I've been armchairing it for a while now and will continue to for a little longer. I've been planning on doing a modern logging layout in N scale but recently have been leaning toward HO. I only have room for a 4x8 with a 9 x1.5 shelf extension. I want to start fairly small. The reasons I've...

    Pine Trees

Here are a couple of pictures of Southern Pines and Loblolly Pines. Loblollies are more common in my area. They have branches lower to the ground than the tall slender southern pines. the first two are Southern Pines and the last two images are Loblollies.. Cedar shingles...

    Pine Trees

Does anyone have any tips on modeling pine trees like those found in the South. Southern pine trees are not triangular shaped like most tree kits and layout pictures that are so common. Southern pine trees (of all kinds) are shaped more like decidious trees. How would one go about making these...

    someone's great personal website

Here is a good site of someone's reflections on model railroading. This person may already be a memeber of the gauge and if you are I hope you don't mind me sharing this. There are many nice pictures and his "ruminations" at the bottom are pretty insightful for beginners...

LL cracked gears ..alive and well

Did you buy the locos from Walthers? If not is it ethical to buy locos somewhere else and then get the parent company to replace bad parts or is this something that Walthers does?
