Bob - Sorry to hear about your problem with the Branchline reefers. Will let you know how my Branchline RI GARX insulated car turns out - but not soon! Everything is in boxes for the move!!! You might buy one Kadee and see what you think. The more detail, the more fragile the car, of...

My cut at this: Best locos (in order): 1. Atlas Master series (the cream of the crop!) 2. Athearn Genesis (quickly rising!) 3. Kato (But DON"T buy the SD40-2 - major problems!) 4. Life Like P2k (very good detail, good runners) 5. Stewart / Atlas Classic series (reliable, less detail)...

Of course, if they were in different towns, with different customers (like the Iowa colleges), it might work. The trick is finding someone to pull them together..... - George

    Coupler Problems H O Gauge

Duey - Kadee couplers are the best on the market !!! You DO need to make sure that the couplers are at the same height (this is true of any coupler) - buy a Kadee gauge, and use Kadee washers to adjust the coupler height if needed. See the instructions with the gauge for more details...

Minor Good News Mostly Very Very Very Bad News

Several universities in Iowa have done exactly that - band together as a group to be able to buy scientific and office supplies or other goods (on-line Chemical journals, for example) at a cheaper price. I think the "theory" is sound, Rory! Not sure about the "practice" - how many shops...

Minor Good News Mostly Very Very Very Bad News

So far I've been lucky that: 1. The discount stores in the QCA are clueless about good railroad equipment - push a lot of Model Power, with P1K as "Top of the line". No P2K, Kato or Stewart anything! Atlas only makes track, THEY think! 2. My store (Midwest Trains in Bettendorf) is...

    Rock Island

Andy - That Athearn "U30B" on e-Bay is really a U33B. Athearn doesn't make a U30B in RI, the number (and design) match the U33B, and the RI never had any U30B locos ! (ref: Marre) I e-mailed the seller about this error. You sure see some strange "Rock Island" locomotives on e-Bay...

    Rock Island

The RI never used DBs ... ... until past 1980 and on my layout! Which is in 1996 (and the RIL is a regional road). When I get my layout back into operation, that is - everything is packed in boxes for the move in June! Help!!! I'm in TRAIN WITHDRAWAL !!!!!!!!!! :eek...

    CRI&P poll

Hi Tyson - I didn't post the poll either here (or on the Atlas Forum) because: 1. The CRI & P Forum reaches more RI fans. 2. I'm a co-moderator of that forum. 3. The polling program is equal or superior to either the Gauge or the Atlas Forum poll programs in terms of number of choices...

    Long ago and far away

Looks like WNC to me, Tyson! To echo the others, good work - and I DO know what it looks like about there, so I know how accurate it is! Will look forward to seeing your next layout! Will be some time before anyone sees mine - it just went into boxes for our move next month (all the way...

Great photos, Topo! Also good looking HO cars - maybe Athearn will do some Rock Island in the Genesis line someday, I hope! - George

    How far from the edge?

I encourage SOME type of barrier if you run close to the edge - I had a beautiful Rock Island Rocket E8A locomotive totally destroyed by a fall. :( The fall was caused by a too low trip pin polevaulting the loco over the edge - at exactly the wrong place on the layout. Murphy's Law...
