    Walk / duck under.....

To me, totally depends on layout height. I had a layout about 40" high with a "crawl" under and hated it. Next layout was 60" high with a true "duck" under and had no problem with it... Layout I'm planning right now will almost certainly have a duck under, again the layout will sit rather high...

Good News - Bad News - Layout Advice

Yeah, I'm HO - Sorry, should have said that. It's unfinished space, so two walls (i.e. 14x29) are concrete, the other two don't yet exist - so the "door" can go near anywhere. I'm planning to build this one at my shoulder level (i.e. about 5'6"), so not that worried about a duckunder for the...

Good News - Bad News - Layout Advice

The bad news is that for 6 months now, in the process of selling a home, moving a few hundred miles and buying a home I've been layout-less and far too infrequent a visitor here. The good news is I'm moved in and now have a good-sized space for a new layout. I've racked my brain and not coming...

    Critiques of Layout

It's HO. 22" min radius. I run mostly K4s and a couple x-8-x and all locos have proved perfectly fine on 22. Longer locos wouldn't be relevant in the period for PRR anyhow. Yet another compromise for sake of much running. I don't anticipate many guest operators. Visitors will mostly be...

    Critiques of Layout

Okay, gang - have at it. Here's the details: Room is 20' x 36' - layout area is 20'x30' leaving one end "open" - other 3 sides are against the wall. I model 1930's-40's era PRR. Emphasis is (heavily) on main-line running. With all due respect to the various focii present in the hobby, I'm...

    radius

Can't say for sure about your Kato, but my Spectrum 3-truck shay will handle the 15" radius curves in the "logging branch" area of my layout... It will NOT handle 14.9" curves, 15" is literally the minimum before derailment, but it will go round them. 18" is a cinch. YMMV since it's a different...

    Keep or Sell?

I went through this exact issue myself. Had boxes of old "toy" trains when I re-entered the hobby. If they were worth much of anything (they're not, of course) it might be different. I decided I did NOT want to use them, and got new stuff. But I kept the old stuff tucked away in a couple...

BEMF Decoders and slow speed operation.

FWIW, I have both BEMF and non-BEMF decoders... Will never buy another one without it.
