Sound Decoder Recs. for several tough ones.

Hey all... At long last I've decided to drink the kool-aid and put sound in my remaining 'silent' locos. Some of 'em are a little tough, though, and I wonder if anyone here has suggestions/experience... best of all, photos and discussion of installs... The locos I'm looking at are (All HO)...

Opinion on HO Bachmann Spectrum K4 Pacific?

Well, I'm a bit of a K4 Junkie... I have 3 of the Bachmanns, 2 BLIs and an MTH on order... Now the BLIs are nicer than the Bachmanns. As they should be, considering they're 3-4x the price. The Bachmanns are very nice locos, good detail, run smooth, decent pulling power. Absolutely worth...

    Older Spectrum

I have several spectrum passenger cars, that I quite like. I have the opportunity to buy a large lot of them, at a good price. But they are the older ones that have horn-hooks rather than knuckles. Does anyone know if these older models still have the feature where the couplers swivel with...

    Converting older rivarossi

Has anyone converted Rivarossi steamers or know a site that details it. I have a NYC Hudson I've never taken out of the box, and am coveting a Hiawatha. I have two heislers, but they came with "the plug" ready to just slap a decoder in... I wonder how much of a pain it is to convert them. I...

    Model Railroader Magazine

I sent it back, and actually sort of regret doing so. As has been noted here, compliance (even sending it back) reinforces the behavior, and I believe the behavior here to be less than ideal. The hounding letters to those who did accept it as a "gift" are just icing on the cake. Some gift...

    Cross overs...

None that I know of, and my plan calls for an 11.5 crossover... 11.5's pair up with #6 switches pretty closely, so they're often used in conjunction with them to have a turnout from one parallel track cross over the other one.

Sources of engine service facility info

I ended up reviewing both this and the McGuirk loco-terminal specific book... Both are interesting and valuable, though Armstrong's material is limited to a scant couple of pages. Good stuff, but it's like comparing the Cliff's Notes to the full novel (where loco service is concerned).

Diagrams - How to wire programming track safely

This came up in another thread. Here are the diagrams I was seeking that show how to wire a programming track directly into the layout safely. Wiring a programming track into the layout is very convenient. You'd simply take a piece of track isolated with gaps/insulating joiners, and connect it...

    Programming/Regular Track Switch Safety

It's at http://www.trains.com/community/forum/topic.asp?page=-1&TOPIC_ID=36389&REPLY_ID=372838#372838... didn't know the etiquette on posting links to another forum... I'm going to post this as a new thread, 'cuz I think it may get buried here.

    Programming/Regular Track Switch Safety

Note: Never Mind... I found it - I was remembering something on another forum I visit... Leaving the original below in case anyone cares... ------------------------------------------------------------------- I could sworn I saw a discussion of this here, but sure can't find it. I'd like...

    Turntable Recs

Many, many people do exactly that. I don't recall any offhand, but I get if you Google a few relevant phrases, you'll find sites describing/showing how to do it.

    3X4 N-Scale plan

Ditto Ditto Ditto. I really dislike the "how much track can we cram in here" type layouts. And a surprising number of 'professional' grade layouts, layouts featured in magazines and in layout design books fit that description. When I posted my layout for thought, I got a lot of "you could fit...

    cutting foam inclines

I'm very mechanically inclined, definitely ready to save a buck, and assuredly in the do-it-yourself camp. Given all that, I still wouldn't do it. I think it's going to be darn-near impossible to get an even grade (remembering that you need it even in two dimensions - even along the grade...

Atlas Deluxe Under Table Switch Machines

That would be my rec. If you're willing, (and assuming you don't want to buy him out!) can you PM me with the guy selling 'em for $11.15 on Ebay. I need just about that many, and that's a very good price...

Atlas Deluxe Under Table Switch Machines

Ditto what Gary said. The atlas controllers will NOT run tortoises properly. The tortoises come with instructions on wiring and you can use SPDT or DPDT toggle switches depending on how you wire them (I use DPDT's myself). I buy these online for about $0.75 each. The review are right, in my...

Foam or Plywood (Yes, again, but specific this time)

Well, in the end, the decision was (at least the materials have been bought for) 1/4" plywood under 2" foam. Hopefully that will be the best of both worlds... Having said that, the ply+foam will be under the "flat" parts of the layout - yards, stations, mainline... Effectively this means the...

    Benchwork in Progress

It's HO Scale for me. Over the weekend, got the backdrop (Masonite) up and lighting installed. Didn't get around to pics, but hopefully tonight or tomorrow. Next step is to spackle the joints/screws in the backdrop and paint it. Once that's done, the plywood & foam can start going down...

    Multiple toggles/multiple tortoises

Yep, went and looked at "reality" and you're exactly right. Not sure why my addled brain put that in... Drawings above have been suitably modified and reposted.

    Multiple toggles/multiple tortoises

Hey Cid - Love to know where you think that smoke is comin' from... I've built that one many times, no smoke... Suspect my diagram is losing something in translation... If I'm steerin' folks wrong, would like to set that right.

    Multiple toggles/multiple tortoises

Okay, here we go. Caveat - I do not know how to draw "formal" electronic diagrams. I think these are clear enough, but if you have an ?'s, please do ask. The colors used are meaningless, except for visual clarity. I have not detailed wiring of the LEDs here. I don't know if people are...
