    DCC Dilemna

I purchased a North Coast System over the weekend. I had trains running in ~30 minutes. The hand held controller i great, programming is simple. If you are looking into a new system, I highly recommend this one. :D

    woodland inclines

I agree with the last comment. I tried them on my new layout, but have found that I prefer the tried and true plywood /homasote structure.

    NMRA Standards for Containers

there was a post on the Trains.com model railroading forum about the need for NMRA standards for containers. The post reads as follows: "The latest (July) NMRA bulletin has a letter from a Dutch modelers who points out that while ALL international containers are 100% compatible, NONE of the...

    Grafitti

One thing that I have done is I have photographed prototype graffitti with my digiatl camera. I then take the photographs and create a collage that i print on decal paper using an ink jet printer. Once the decals are applied to my HO scale models they look like my layout has a massive problem...

    Bridges on grades

I am currently constructing a layout that will have girder bridges (Central Valley) on a grade. Has anybody experienced problems with locating a girder bridge ( or another type of bridge for that matter) on a grade? Is there anything special with respect to the supporting structure that I need...

NMRA standards You might want to check out the NMRA website. They have a lot of that type of info. Check out this page S-8 of the NMRA standards. It lists the apprporaite clearance clearances for different radii curves in whatever scale you're using.

    Diosol

Bix stripper I'd be really careful about using Bix stripper or any similar stripper on plastic models. That stuff is pretty caustic and probably would eat throught styrene and most other plastics.

    Growing by leaps and bounds

This is a helpful sight Continuing this thread. I have starting using this site a lot in the past couple of weeks. It is well laid out, has great info and I love those pictures. Once I get beyond the benchwork phase, I'll try to add some pics of my layout as well.:)

    Atlas Turnouts Yes or No???

I have used Atlas turnouts on all of my previous HO layouts. I found that over time they failed--what seems to contribute to their failure is the use of the Atlas switch machines that are very hard on the turnout mechanism. A friend of mine has used Peco turnouts for years and in a layout...

    MicroLux Grit Blaster

In the latest MicroMark catalog they list an item made by Micro Lux called a grit blaster that can be used to remove paint from brass and plastic models. Ostensibly it is powered by conecting it to a Shop Vac. Has anyone used this product? How well does it work? Is it safe with plastic models?

    Western Pacific "F"s

    Couplers

Bob: I am sorry if you took offense to my earlier comment. I think that you misunderstood me. I am glad you asked your question and please continue to ask any and all questions. What I meant about paying attention to the details is making sure that you use the height gauge, adjust the...

    Couplers

Hi Bob: Many clubs require Kadee's on their layouts. I prefer Kadees in most cases because I think that they are more durable and may hold up better if you are running really long trains. I have been using the couplers that come with the newer cars (I think most are Bachmann Easy Mates) and...

    Couplers

My view of the world is to do whater it takes to maximize operating efficiency and minimize problems. That often comes at the expense of prototypical accuacy. With respect to couplers. I will stick to the #5 and its cousins because they have worked very well for me. The problems that the...

    Couplers

I too have experienced a lot of the problems you mention. Track laying is really critical. One point not mentioned in this thread is the proper weighting of cars. I have conformed to the NMRA standards for weigthing cars and have found that this helps with some of the uncoupling and a lot of...

    Couplers

The earlier suggestion about the Kadee height gauge is excellent. Also MicroMark sells a special pair of pliers to bend the hose on the Kadee couplers to the correct height (you can bend the hose either up or down). If you get both the height gauge and the pliers, your couplers will work great.
