    Crest Train Engineer

I'm not an expert. The connection to the track is simple, it does not appear to require anything special in the way of trackwork, or super cleanliness. The basic unit (orange) has momentum, braking, and direction controls. It will control only one locomotive at a time. The 'Engineer', you...

    Close coupling a Bachmann 4-8-4 N&W "J"...

Hello Bob, We have exchanged posts before. Not that it matters, but I enjoy seeing someone take these less expensive models and expend the energy to improve them, rather than just buying, six $250 locos and then complaining, at length, of the flaws they have found in them. I have done work on...

    Santa Fe 2-10-2

I have a United brass model of an atsf 2-10-2. It's not perfect but s/b closer to the prototype. It would be less than $200. Contact me off-line if interested. dlong@ktc.com

    Backdrops

Jim, Seems to me, that if you glue the walls to foam core board, you might get something you like. Also, this would allow for insetting the doors and windows as much as a quarter of an inch, if you went through the entire thickness of the foam board. This method requires cutting the outline...

    Rescuing a Bachmann 4-8-4 Northern...

Bachmann 4-8-4 I have read shaygetz's writings here, for some time. Always impressed with his mechanical skills. So I was surprised to read that he was doing work on one of these. When I read further, he explained his motive for this effort. These show up at train shows and on eBay, some of...

    BLI 4-6-4 J1E Oiling

Here's an idea. Watch your engine roll down the track, where two pieces, in the drive train, rods, valve gear, rub together, put a drop of oil at that point. Since this is brand new, I don't believe that areas, such as, driver axle bearings, worm/spur gears, will need lubing at this time.

Is this locomotive a Bachmann Spectrum series?

Bachmann 4-8-4 You have found out that these engines are not Spectrums. They were imported from China, I believe in the '70s/80s. They are nicely detailed and relatively accurate models of the SF engines. Bachmann detailed them for NYC, Burlington, and SF. Some of them had smoke and a...

Clark, I have a couple of these Bachmann Spectrum Classics that I would sell. Email me if interested.

Why is Athearn not in the new Walthers Catalog?

Heck ya, let's get rid of capitolism. Will have the "State" selling model trains, maybe patterned after that fabulously successful Soviet Union economy, all with NEM couplers. The State can then decide what should sell and at what price.

    mth locomotives

MTH Locos Their O scale things are good. They produce them in "027", semi-scale, and scale. I have had their HO K4, smoker, on order for at least six months, I figure they can drop it in my casket. I would expect it to be an acceptable model.

    $50 box lot...

$50 Dollar Box The "Mikado" is a nice inexpensive model. It has very good detailing. If the smoke generator is good, you will have a convincing volume of smoke. The engine is actually an accurate model of, I believe, a Reading H-9(?) Consolidation. The shell was done so well, that Bowser put...

    Couplers!

Couplers Interesting information. I'm sure many of us experience trains breaks. Also, have you seen the Kadee #148 "Whisker". Eliminates the separate centering spring, and looks like a McHenry. HA!:)

any one can help me plz?

dodi, Here is what I feel is a more achievable way to start a business over there . Become an importer. Order a Walthers catalog, I would give you the web link, but this forum will not let me. Do a search for that web site. Some of the locos look like Fairbanks-Morse, some like GE "U"...

    Akane Allegheny Motor

I need opinions concerning a motor problem w/this loco. Engine was built in 1964. It has never been run. In checking it out, I found that it would not operate. Eventually, I identified the following. Once the motor was freed, it would run fine, but would start 7 out of 10 times. Several(?)...
