    Layout woes

So I've been constructing a layout based on the plans provided in an Atlas track plan book, and then expanded on for the area I have to work with. But I've obviously messed something up... All track is brand spankin new code 80 Atlas sectional and flex Brand new Prodigy Express DCC controller...

    turntable

Sorry to revivie an old thread, but instead of starting a new one I wanted to add to this one. I just grabbed this 120 manual kit from Walthers and it's driving me nuts. I also got the 6 bay Union City Roundhouse... The tracks don't line up properly if I put all the tracks flush to the back...

    install decoder on Bachmann 4-8-2

motor and headlights are run through this decoder. this decoder is the one I see recommended for this loco on many websites, so I would hope it would work okay. Never tested the engine per digitrax instructions... I may go a pickup a lenz decoder to see if it will work...

    install decoder on Bachmann 4-8-2

Hey all, Recently I've been trying to convert my Bachmann Spectrum 4-8-2 lt. Mountain to DCC operation. I have a pair of DZ143 decoders that I purchased, and both have gave me the same issue with the loco...the first started smoking and now has some charring on the wrapping of the decoder. I...

    Kitbash a Bachmann lt. mountain

Some will remember my first post here asking if there were an CN streamlined N scale Mountain loco's based on the CNR 6060 Bullet Nosed Betty. Well, none does exisist in non-brass of course, but I still want one on my layout, so I'm going to try a kitbash. I got a Bachmann lt. Mountain 4-8-2...

    Athearn 4-6-6-4 Challanger

I hooked up an older powerpack upto the track (not my EZcommand) and was able to get more volume out of it. It's still not to the volume I thought it would produce, but it's audible and sounds great. the store I bought it from has an undecorated Clinchfield one instock so I may go down and see...

    Athearn 4-6-6-4 Challanger

theres off, low, mid, and high settings. low I can barley hear it. I gotta put my ear right up against the thing. mid, I can only hear it when it's idle, and only if it's REALLY quiet. High, well thats what I'm talking about in the forum. I wonder if my power pack isn't putting out enough juice?

    Athearn 4-6-6-4 Challanger

I picked up this beast of locomotive yesterday and have been running it on my bachmann EZtrack/EZcommand test setup while my full layout is undergoing planning/construction. All I can say is wow...what a loco, it's so finley detailed, and operates amazingly well at all speeds, very smooth, and...

it becomes a compromise of what I want out of the hobby, and the space requirements. Unfortunatly the whole room cannot be dedicated to the hobby due to limited storage. The folded dogbone is a good idea, and I can see the advantage for reach in this setup. The lower staging yard still needs...

Oh I agree the 3' wide layout may be a bit tricky to get across, but I'm willing to do a workaround using castors and modular benchwork. as for the staging area. I plan on the incline being as long as the bench  So I got... 9 feet or so to drop down to the lower deck. obviously I'll...

Here we go! Gotta start somewhere.

wow, I just took a stroll down this whole thread while having my morning coffee's at work. I'm very impressed, not to mention inspired! Your handi-work is nothing short of stunning...and the evolution your layout has taken is awe inspiring to say the least. Makes me want to dive head first...

It's actually a bit wider than 5ft. its 5ft from the wall to my workbench which is about 1-1/2ft long. then I got guitar cases along the wall. each square is a foot yes.

Well, this is my redesign using the wall instead of a central 4x8 table. I must say I'm much happier with this layout and feel it a little less of a cluster $#% in terms of track. I hope others share the same opinion. Anyways.... some operational details. Minimum radius is 11", but has the...

Opinions on a 4x8 roundy rounder

I was going to do a 4x8 myself as well...but after much thought I decided a longer wall sized layout would work better. if you gotta have it up against the wall, it might be a better move for you as well. I think were' in the same boat in terms of space tho.

to be honest, I doubt that more than my family and I will be viewing these trains.... but I sat in that room and did some planning and it looks like I can use 140 inches of one wall, and then another 55 inches of the other wall. I plan on coming out about 30-32 inches in width. So I should be...

I like the idea, and it would work, but unfortunatly I don't have the two walls to build off of. the island style is actually the best way to do it, or I gotta go with a shelf thats only 2ft wide. I'm still going to play around with how things are in the room though and see if I can get that...

seems like I'll scale it back a bit from what I've been reading. I want a small yard, ability to run passenger trains, and a turntable... but I also want some decent scenic zones. the room is a small extra bedroom...but it's also a storage room. you got the two long walls, the short wall and...

drill track? as in a longer passing siding? I think theres a couple of place to throw a longer train while it's waiting for another to pass or whatever near the main yard. I guess I don't fully understand. it might be complicated, but I take my time when I do this kinda stuff and I want...
