motor and headlights are run through this decoder. this decoder is the one I see recommended for this loco on many websites, so I would hope it would work okay. Never tested the engine per digitrax instructions... I may go a pickup a lenz decoder to see if it will work...

It's actually a bit wider than 5ft. its 5ft from the wall to my workbench which is about 1-1/2ft long. then I got guitar cases along the wall. each square is a foot yes.

I was going to do a 4x8 myself as well...but after much thought I decided a longer wall sized layout would work better. if you gotta have it up against the wall, it might be a better move for you as well. I think were' in the same boat in terms of space tho.
