    What's your layouts time frame?

Early Fall of 1996. The RI in my universe is a regional road (simular to the IAIS and IMRL in this universe). That way I can run AMTRAK P40s/Superliners and BN/SF as well!

    Is this a SW1500 or a SW7

SW1500 - I have the Athearn Rock Island version.

    New user-- isolated sections

The usual code 100 plastic joiners work with the EZ track. BTW, I have used my Zephyr DCC with EZ track with no problems at all.

    Bad spot of track

Once I had a coupler hose catch the track and flip the loco - make sure the hoses don't dip too low (use the Kadee gauge).

    Some stupid questions

Here is some DCC info that might be better for beginners: http://tonystrains.com/tonystips/dccprimer/index.htm Good luck, and continue to ask questions!

    Model Railroading Magazine

Model Railroading is indeed gone. As suggested by others, Model Railroader is an option for a general MRRing magazine, as is MRC (although I rarely get it - they never seem to be modeling something I'm interested in). Lately, I have been enjoying more road specific magazines/journals...

Kato problems. Anyone have it to?

KCS - Ok, I just tried an Atlas forum search, and the wonderful photos of the fix in the thread I found have gone to the dreaded red X. I suggest you ask on the Atlas forum instead of searching - the person you need is: User Name: wnanney Real Name: Bill Nanney He has repaired...

    My loco Roster

Cidchase - Better go to the link Tom gave for a look - my F40PH is undergoing some work and is currently in pieces! Sorry. Having seen all three, I would agree with Tom that the best is the Kato, followed by Walthers and then the Bachmann. If I needed another, I would go with the Kato...

need help of seasoned RR Modeler

I agree with Stuart - isopropanol and a rag work wonders! I also use a Bright Boy for the really bad spots.

    My loco Roster

    Well, HE started it !!! Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific (34) 2-8-0 2008 (Bachmann) 2-8-2 2710 (Athearn Genesis) BL2: 425 (P2K) DL107: 623 (P1K) Doodlebug 9090 (Bachmann) E6A: 629 (P2K sound) E8A: 654 (P2K) F7A: 109, 115 (Stewart) F7B: 109 (Stewart) GP7: 1297...

    What happened with P2k.

The latest Walthers flyer shows a P2K 50' single door box car time-saver kit due out this November. Perhaps Walthers is just now getting around to making the P2K kits again after the transition, and more will be out next year? Just a thought ....

    RTR Freight Car(s)

The remark was not a "bash" but an accurate statement that Athearn RTRs and Blue boxes as a general rule do not have the detail nor, in many cases, the accurate markings that are found on the brands I was talking about. Anyone who has been in this hobby more than a year or two knows this, and...

    RTR Freight Car(s)

In terms of RTR cars, I like detail and accurate markings so I go with: 1. Atlas - some of the best rolling stock made in MRRing, period! 2. Kadee - only problem is that they are too shiney - a quick spray of dullcoat makes them perfect. Plus they already have Kadee couplers !!! 3. P2K...

    Kato SD40-2 VS Athearn SD40-2

I don't know about the CP paint schemes, but the Kato will have far better detail and drive than the Athearn (far better than even the newer improved drive model). The bad news is that this particular Kato has electrical pickup problems (and, of course, costs a lot more!). The good news is, once...

    Next HO purchase

Well, my P2K Rock Island GP38-2 (delivered to the RI in 1976) is FINALLY on it's way from Tony's, and I have the Atlas IC boxcar (built 1967) and the two blue RI GP7s (out of the CIP in 1976) on order, so I can even narrow it down equipment-wise to the late 60's - late 70's. However, I model...

To clip or not to clip.......Coupler pins

I second Fred's use of the Kadee coupler gauge - I had a P2K E8A (Rock Island Rocket) flip off a turnout and onto a concrete floor (totally destroyed!) due to a coupler pin ! It was it's first (and last) spin around the track !! I have used the Kadee gauge (and bending tool) ever since !!!

    Branchline Yardmaster cars

I think Branchline and P2K have some of the best kits in HO! They require more work than some other brands, but, unlike Athearn, inAccrurail, and Roundhouse they have really good detail and accurate markings (at least for my Rock Island). They are well worth the extra work and time...

    Life-like rolling stock?

As Larry said, don't waste your money. Too bad there isn't any Proto 2000 in N-scale. The HO scale P2K rolling stock and kits are superb !!! They rank with Atlas, Kadee and Branchline for my top 4 rolling stock makers. I bet they will start making N-scale P2K soon - then you will...

    Road ID

The new Iowa, Chicago and Eastern (ICE, ex-IMRL) was renting a good number of ex-BN FURX locos for a while while they got their feet on the ground. Now I'm starting to see more ICE painted locos on the rail. I guess rental locos are good business!

Fallen flag cars in a train

Still see some Rock Island blues (box and hoppers) here in Iowa from time to time. Also SOO hoppers and cars. Saw a Milwaukee gondola yesterday. All remarked for the owning road (IC&E), of course.
