Here are some more pictures of my progress so far. In order to do the bottom plating at the bow, some side plating had to be put on. These side pieces have the remains of the original 5” casemate guns that were removed almost as soon as the ship was launched. It must have been pretty...

    Modelik Flower class corvette

Gorgeous ship, Chris! Very inspiring. The really nice thing about the little details is that you can always do it over if it's not up to snuff. Screw up the hull...... What kind of knife do you use to cut those tiny internal cuts? My X-acto knife seems to have the wrong kind of angle.

I don't have much of an update today and, sadly, no pix. I am continuing to plate the hull, working from the front to the back now. Still having some minor problems with asymmetry, but nothing that is insurmountable. I'm on the road today, but will try to get some photos unloaded from the...

John C Butler Class DE Build

Good idea on the props. I think I'll have to put the prop shaft and braces on the hull before painting. I should be able to fabricate a rudder and then take it off after painting. Then I'll just have to be careful. Sounds like a recipe for disaster!

John C Butler Class DE Build

Good idea for the work-stand! I think I'll cobble one up for myself.

I figured out the real reason that my deck warped and it had nothing to do with glue or water. I had displeased the Overlords of Modeldom! The first time I glued the deck down I had foolishly used Chapelle's Search for Speed Under Sail,History of the American Sailing Navy, and American Small...

Yes, it's an interesting "method" all right. Step 1: Forge ahead. Step 2: Screw up. Step 3: Think. Step 4: See step 1.:cry:

Thanks for all of the words of encouragement. I have been a modeler since boyhood, working mainly in wood and metal with the occasional excursion into plastic. Plastic model kits don’t have a satisfying level of fabrication for me, so I never got real involved in them, but I got pretty good at...

    Wilhelmshaven 1:200 scale USS Constitution

My wife thinks I'm obsessed by every ship or airplane that crosses my field of vision! Many a newlywed's spat was spatted over just how much time I was going to devote to my latest "interest". When I started spending $$$ on full size aviation, those little models didn't seem like such a...

Full hulls without too many tears

Hardly looks " aright mess". I looks great to me. I don't understand some of your idioms, though. They say that the US and the UK are two countries separated by a common language!:) Are you telling us that you did not glue the hull plates to every bulkhead? Do you think that is how Cristoph...

No photos this time, just an update. It took a week of pondering, but I've decided to forge ahead and try to fix the damage. There is too much work in the hull so far to scrap it and start over. I'm going to try something tonight and should have some pix tomorrow if it works.

    Wilhelmshaven 1:200 scale USS Constitution

Great looking details, Jim. Did you really cut out those bitty little fife rails with a knife?:-o I haven't had time to look through the complete thread yet But what I've seen is great! I attempted the old Scientific (wood) model of this about 30 years ago. Got as far as the standing...

Here I made the chain pads the correct shape according to the drawing I have This project has turned into a “two steps forward, one step back” affair. I inlaid all of the triple thick chipboard between the bulkheads at deck level to keep the deck flat once I installed it and instead, the...

    Gremir HMS Badsworth

Extremely clean job! "Boxes" are square, hull is beautiful. I'm glad to see someone else builds (at least posts) as slowly as I do!

    USS Pennsylvania

Let's see...6 inches at 1/250th scale is ... .024inches! As long as I have a finite tolerance to work to  It is interesting to note asymmetry on the real thing. I would have never guessed! As an update, I haven't worked on the old girl much this week due to Boy Scout camping trips...

HIJMS Fuso (Digital Navy) 1:250 Somewhat different!!

JohnMGD: Truly brilliant work on the cutaway! The cutaway of the gun turret is really great. I also like the way the a/c catapult on top of the turret gives it that really busy, meticulously detailed look. The kind of model you could look at for hours and always find something new.

Before I actually was able to open the model files from GreMir I was getting a little annoyed with all of the passwords and encryption keys, etc. Once I finally got the pertinent e-mails out of the way I was stunned by the kit. The model is not only quite detailed, but GreMir gives us the...

    USS Pennsylvania

Well, my friends, it is time for an update. On my second attempt at plating the hull I am working much more slowly and trying to think some problems through before I make too many mistakes. After careful sanding, I glued the connector strips directly to the bulkheads taking care to fill in...

    USS Spruance 1/200th

VERY nice ship, sir. I,too like the card mast. Keep up the great work and I love seeing the pictures. Don't worry about going back and forth between wire and card. Maybe the wire mast wasn't as good as you hoped, but I bet the one on your next model will be!:)

Ha ha! What I create I can also destroy! As promised, I tore all of the hull plates off and will give it a second try. I incurred some damage to the bulkheads on the upper side of the hull from all of the rolling around. I relaminated the corners with...
