    Some weathering and graffiti

Arlaghan - I looked out on the Internet for examples of railroad graffiti (it's amazing how much there is out there), and used those as a general guide for most of them. Some of them I simply improvised myself. Mike - Great tips from you, thanks very much for them. I'm looking forward to...

    Some weathering and graffiti

Thanks for the great tips, Mike, I really appreciate it. Everything you said makes sense and I'm printing it out for future reference. I'm a BIG fan of your work I've seen in the past, so hopefully with some practice I can start to get the hang of it. Regards,

Need help identifying this car type...

I think I found a suitable stand-in for this in a MDC Roundhouse kit: http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/480-1238 It comes in an undec kit as well. The only real noticeable difference I can see is that the Roundhouse kit has a full ladder on the right end and grabs on the left...

    Happy Birthday to:-

Thanks, guys, and I extend greetings to my fellow birthday boys. Was a great birthday today, shared cake and ice cream with my family, and as far as train stuff - got a gift certificate to my favorite LHS! :D :D :D

    Finally - some progress!

Great looking "canyon" you have there with the tracks in it. It has the right look to it, and as you noted sometimes too much track doesn't look right in the situation. Really like your buildings as well, please keep posting more pics. :thumb:

    Some weathering and graffiti

Thanks, guys. Tom - I started off using acrylics washes (Burnt Sienne first, followed by Burnt Umber) to get the basic colors you see there in the rusting areas. After that dried, I used some chalks I got from Bragdon Enterprises to add more rusting to various areas. I used Testors...

Need help identifying this car type...

Can anyone tell me what this boxcar would be called: I found it on the MOPAC website and the details are thus: From/To: 786200-786399 DESIG: RBL CPY: 70 IL: 51'5" Doors: 10' PL CUFT 4543 LTWT: 74500 BLT: 68 I'm guessing that it's a 51'5" single plug door, but what does...

    Some weathering and graffiti

Here's some cars I was experimenting on today with weathering techniques and some graffiti. I found these MDC Roundhouse cars cheap at my LHS, so thought I would work on them and see what I could do. They're too late for my time period (1960's) and I'm not a big fan of graffiti, so I'll...

    wiring in decoder Athearn ho

As an alternate method for securing the (black) grounding wire to the Athearn frame, I remove the male portion of the lamp assembly which leaves only the female portion of the assembly still attached to the frame (I use LEDs so no need for that incandescent assembly). I then attach the black...

    pics of new warehouse

Here's some pics of the recently completed warehouse I just finished up for the layout. It's the Walthers REA (Railway Express Agency) structure which I made as a flat, using the back wall as another front wall to make the structure appear twice as big. Then used sheet styrene to fill out the...

    Layout Progress

Thanks, guys. It's a work in progress, but slowly it's starting to take shape. I'm using Digitrax Super Chief for DCC control. I have the DT400 throttle and also a UT-1 throttle for guest use. I've got 4 jacks around the layout so I can move about. I've got some more pics on my...

    Layout Progress

It's the end of the year, so a good time to take stock in where we're at. Here's some updated photos of my layout that I took today. I plan to have some light manufacturing (Owosso Furniture Manufacturing) on the end of the peninsula between the two sets of tracks (opposite the engine...

    Model Railroader. then and now

I've been in the hobby actively for about 5 years now, and just renewed my subscription to MR for 3 more years last month. Yeah, I whine about it from time to time, but ya know - I still think it's the best mag for the buck on model railroading. My subscription to Model Railroading has...
