    radioactive waste prototype

Another story that could be copied for models. When I was doing graduate work during the late 50's I spent a few days at Arco, Idaho. It's famous for having the first nuclear reactor, I believe, or one of the first. There were many of them scattered across the desert. I was to sterilize meat in...

    radioactive waste prototype

Here's another "waste" story. Back in the 50's a friend was attending a conference in Moscow, Soviet Union at the University. Across the street there was a large vacant area with a lot of apple trees in full bloom. My friend asked his Soviet colleague what that was over there after he noticed...

    radioactive waste prototype

SF Jack, that's interesting work. Did you happen to go to school in Davis or Berkeley doing environmental science? I was in the same building with a lot of those people back in the 70's and 80's to early 90's. Most were doing their Ph.D's. I saw a lot of computer modeling going on. Got to...

    radioactive waste prototype

SFJ, interesting subject to model. I do have a nuclear power plant in my display, see "pics of Equity Junction" or "more pics of same" on this forum. It was a kit from Heljan purchased from Walthers. I believe it's still current. I see you work around the "lab". My expertise in that area...

    Are your trains an escape?

nkp174, I retired from the academic life at UC quite a few years ago, and you know what? I don't miss it at all. However, I do run a large astronomy club locally, and keep up with things in the scientific world that way and through reading the journals. But I don't miss all the meetings and...

    My Final Trackplan.....

Josh, nice plans. Haven't been following the whole thread since it's so long, but when do you expect to finish the layout? Would love to see it in it's final form, with trains and all. That's when the real fun starts. But planning is good too. It's all part of the same thing. I remember, I...

Newbie Needs Help with Electrical Question

Hey Lester, get well soon, we need you on the gauge. RAJ's problem sounds like a classical overload. The simple solution is a larger transformer for the lights. Dan of Diesel above probably is on the right track for power packs. I'm sort of out of this myself since I use an AC system for...

Diesel, know what you mean. You're in a different galaxy in there.

    Are your trains an escape?

Vsailor above gave me an idea. So I picked a bottle of Beck's out of the bar fridge and worked my way through the garage out to the train house. Once in there I proceeded to get my Union Pacific PA double unit 25 car freight on time with the schedule. My schedule. Starting out slowly it...

    Falls here, back to modeling!

Still summer It's still summer, sort of, here in NorCal for another couple of months. Then the rains begin. This is the time of year when it cools down to the high 80's and when we get a lot of our outdoor work done. Painting, trimming, wood stacking, etc. This is our second spring here in...

    What makes a layout "realistic"?

Riverotter has defined this so well. I'd consider myself an "operations modeler" with some overtones of color. Please, not "colour", unless you happen to live on the middle border. Extreme realism is not for me. Heck, I'll even mix the periods together in a scene if I like the result...

    Questions about DCC

Doctorwayne has it right as far as I'm concerned. A while back I tried DCC on a DC layout with very poor results. I gave up after trying several different decoders and nothing gave good running. So I gave away or threw away most of the equipment and went to a tried and true system: Marklin...

    Are your trains an escape?

Are your trains an escape? In my case, YES. Escape from the real world, from everything else I need to do or think about. Some may want to get away from mothers, wives, husbands, others, kids, school work, etc. Have you ever stayed home from work to work on or with your setup. Mine is the...

    Question on using foam

J, I concur with MT Hopper with using the hotwire for shaping and his use of Liquid Nails latex glue for gluing. Also, I have found that the denser foam found at art stores, Michaels for example, works much better than any found at a home improvement store. I used the 2" foam and it can be found...

More Pics of Equity Junction, NV

Equity Junction continued A super market from the 50's. Remember those? Then the "old town" from the gold rush days. Then it's the UP Mike waiting for a load near EQ Mt. back in the good ol days. :thumb: And last it's EQ Motel time. Remember, this is Nevada, so anything is possible.

    Starting the scenery

You're doing well. After the plastercloth I used a lot of Joint compound to further shape the hills on my layout. It comes in small buckets and is available at any hardware store. Get your hands into it and make any design or shape you want. Keep the hands wet for best results. Let dry a...

More Pics of Equity Junction, NV

NS, I got that DB ICE train in one of those Marklin starter sets a few years ago from a dealer in Toronto. You know, with trains, track, switches, digital power packs, hookup wire, etc. That was before I started my HO 50's-60's southwestern display. So It's a little out of place but I like...

    Uncoupler magnets: Your experience?

The Marklin uncouplers, electrically operated, that I use, work very well. The couplers themselves never uncouple voluntarily and also couple easily when needed. I've never had a problem with coupling and uncoupling using this system.

    Rant: Outrageous Pre-order Lead Times

This is a good subject and one with which I've had some experience. Recently, I ordered an expensive digital with sound, etc Marklin SP PA-1 double unit, double powered loco that wasn't quite in stock yet. ie: backordered, from a reputable mailorder dealer. I've always had a thing for SP and...
