News update After the problems with the overheating tender axle box the loco returned to the East Lancashire Railway workshops for attention. Last Thusday the loco made a further test run to Crewe and was deemed to be fit for a mainline passenger carrying trip today, its first in 40 years ...

    Spam Can on test !!!

Sadly the loco did not complete it's test run. It suffered an overheated tender axle bearing at Shrewsbury and had to return to base at reduced speed. :( John.

    Spam Can on test !!!

Not the greatest of pictures but I hope they will still appeal to the British ex-pats on The Gauge. “Battle of Britain” Class 4-6-2 no. 34067 “Tangmere” on a test run from the East Lancashire Railway. The pictures were taken 30 minutes ago on the West Coast Mainline near to Warrington. Happy...

    Freiburg Tram

Ron, Terry. Here in the U.K. we also call them Trams. Many U.K. cities had tram systems in the first part of the 20th Century and abandoned them in favour of motor busses. They are now starting to see the error of their ways and are building new tramways. (History repeats itself  )...

    My freelanced railroad

Thanks Doug, Thanks Gavin, I don't know how I managed to miss the Modemo trams when I visited Doug's layout page :o Must be old age and rapidly failing eye-sight :D John. P.S. Despite my fascination with all things Swiss I actually live in England. I think there are a couple of Modemo...

    My freelanced railroad

Beautiful layout Gavin. I can't get enough of your photos. Who makes the articulated light rail vehicles? I'm sure I could make use of a couple. I assume, being Japanese, that they are good runners. John.

    TERRIBLE British Rail Service

Brian, I don't wish to get involved in a slanging match but I think a number of your statements are a little deceiving especially to our overseas readers. You say: "Also, because the Swiss system is generally so efficient, when things go wrong they don't know what to do" I think this...

    TERRIBLE British Rail Service

This is one of the Virgin Voyager trains I mentioned. This particular one is a class 220 but there is also a class 221 with the ability to tilt on curves.

    TERRIBLE British Rail Service

Hi Mike, It's not only destinations that are off the "beaten business path" that suffer poor service. The Virgin Trains service on the West Coast Mainline which goes from London to Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh is often on the verge of collapse mainly as a result of...

    Structures?

Mike, I hate to admit this but my non-native languages leave much to be desired. :o The Kato Re460 loco in my photo carried the Italian "Chi rimorchia di più" on one side and the Swiss German "Wer hat die meisten Anhänger?" on the other. Roughly translated I believe it means "Who carries the...

    Structures?

Nick, What country or area are you modelling ? I know of monasteries in Central Europe that resemble large churches. I have attached a photo of the Vollmer church on my old N-scale layout. I'm sure that two or three of these could be kitbashed into a larger structure.

    Ads on Trains

Firstly can I thank everyone who has contributed to this really interesting thread. We have had input from all around the globe :) The British Class 47 diesel loco in my picture carries a livery to publicise a railway anti-trespass campaign. (Note the mandatory yellow warning panel as...

    Ads on Trains

Thanks for that Ron. The Re460 received it's Zugkraft Aargau livery in 1996/97 as part of the Swiss Railways 150 year celebrations and I was originally told that it was in recognition of Kanton Aargau being a major sponsor of the celebrations. The canton was happy to be a sponsor because they...
