    New Layout Space with Puzzle

Phase I Thanks, Russ, for your response. Unfortuantely, there is only room for one track, not two on each of the two levels running behind the furnace. (Even as it is, the frame butts against the exhaust pipe.) I am going with your suggetion of a gauntlet track with a passing track in the...

    Q - Acrylic Craft Paint

If this is water based, use a technique that woodworkers often employ: paint both sides to prevent any warping due to uneven moisture absorbson. Sealling one side will help with the uniformity of the top coat but not control for warping. Cheers, Donn

    New Layout Space with Puzzle

At this point, Ted, I am open to all suggestions and the idea of a liftout bridge across the opening of the funace is worth considering. My initial concerns would be two. (A) Whatever space would be used for the bridge would be taken away from the space between the sliding door to the furnace...

    New Layout Space with Puzzle

Thanks, Dave, for doing the conversion. I think I have finally figured out how to convert my photoshop images to JPEG. The next post should be in order. :)

    New Layout Space with Puzzle

Hi All, This is my first post to the Track Planning Forum, which I have recently discovered at precisely the right moment. I am about to begin building a layout in my basement, which present an interesting problem that you might be able to help me with. First, a few specifications. I...

    Benchwork question

One problem with your 1/2" shelf is that it makes access to the underside of the layout almost impossible. And you will need this no matter how much you construction you do in advance of putting the top in its legs. If you need the storage, as I do with mine, you might tryin dropping your shelf...

    How do you pre-bend rail?

Pining ties I had a little trouble, Shamus, imaging "place a track pin at either side of the track on a sleeper (Tie) , two sleepers in (not in the middle as this will reduce the gauge slightly)." Does this mean two sleepers in from the end or from the middle of the yard of track? And when...

    Peco Turnout machines

Dave and Jim, Thanks for the feedback. Jim gave me the answer I was hoping to hear---leaving springs in Peco turnouts using Tortoise machines, with the possibility of adjusting the tension---as I am using DCC and want to be super sure of point contact. Dave offers the more discerning...

    Peco Turnout machines

Peco with Tortoise Jim You mentioned using Peco with Tortoise machines, which is what I am planning on doing. But do you remove the spring from the Peco turnouts? Or is the Tortoise strong enough to overcome the initial resistance? Any problems with this combination?

Mixing Peco and Walters/Shinohara Curved Turnouts

Thanks, Gary, for your last two posts. Having the opportunity to see what you have done would be most helpful but I will write privately about that. The stryene suggestion is a clear solution to mixing codes if that is necessary. And perhaps I will drop Peco a line and ask why the gap, just...

Mixing Peco and Walters/Shinohara Curved Turnouts

The real rub Thanks all for the replies. Gary comes closes to the issue and helps me identify the core of the problem. Shinohara does have code 100 curved turnouts but does not have ##6 1/2, 7, and 7 1/2 in curved, leaving us roughly where Peco does, suspended between #6 and #8 (Peco: medium...

Mixing Peco and Walters/Shinohara Curved Turnouts

The lack of Peco curved turnouts---there seems to be only the medium with ca.17"/20" and a large with 30"/60" radi---is a frustration to one who need exactly whatl falls between their two options. Walters (made byShinohara) has four: #6-1/2 Curved Turnout; Inside Radius 18", Outside Radius...

Wiring for Tortoise Switch, Peco Turnouts, and LEDs.

I am looking for a very BASIC and CLEAR diagram of how to wire two Tortoise switchs to two Peco turnout that includes (a) one DTDP switch, (b) two bi-directional LEDs on the control board, (c) two bi-directional LEDs, one next to each of the two parallel tracks joined by the turnouts, all of...

    Minature electrical connectors???

Using track power? What would be especially interesting would be to use the power in the tracks to light up the cars but I do not have the slightest clue as to how to do this. Some type of bushing to the metal wheels? Using track power should be especially attractive to DCC folks where the...

    NCE decoder D14SRP in a Spectrum 2-8-0

    Measurements on Peco Turnouts

Meaurements of Switch Track on Turnouts I have been able to piece together an answer to my original question from a combination of the responses I have received, the Walther's catalogue and the NMRA specifications sheets. The radii on the switch track of various turnouts are as follows...

    Measurements on Peco Turnouts

Thanks Thanks for the tips. I forgot to mention is that I work in HO. What surprised me a bit is that the Peco site does not have a complete list of their turnouts, not to mention technical information on the turnouts. I was looking for a rather simple conversion chart that would line up...
