GP9RM is here! Now some questions...

Hey all, The first of two Life Like Canadian National GP9RM's has arrived... zebra striped workhorse #4012, just waiting for my impending layout! Detail wise it looks great, and will serve me very well as a road switcher on whatever my layout is going to look like. However... The...

    A Question about Autoracks

Despite leaning towards doing a non-auto related industry for my first layout, autoracks and extended length boxcars still parade by my house almost every day. The reason for not using them is simply that they do not perform well on tight radius turns, and they do not look good on anything...

    CN London Pics!

My Bad. I lived in Victoria for a year doing my internship at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church downtown from 1994 to 1995... I was being general that the southwest coast of BC is the warmest place in Canada... Yeah... that's it! :)

    Experience with the Appalacian Central

True... but here's the rub... the locos that come out of the GM plant come out unpainted. At least as far as I've been able to observe. I don't think that they receive their paint job until they arrive at the respective destination... I'm not totally convinced on the BC thing... and could...

    Experience with the Appalacian Central

Yes I did Tad... thanks... I had a bit of computer trouble so I couldn't respond to you directly. I checked out the detail on the running of traffic for the Canadian Pacific line that runs through London. Industry wise, it is similar to what Canadian National runs, although I imagine there are...

    Experience with the Appalacian Central

Getting back to the original concept design of the Appalachian Central... I may indeed run with this, although I am going to rethink my intentions for what I am going to model. I am still going to do Canadian National, but instead of trying to model Southern Ontario, I may try to do...

Just to make sure this is the Aspenmodel Switch Machine MWA-02-S on page 113? Very cool :thumb:

    VIA Derailment

More info... It was Train 86 or 89 (two conflicting reports) eastbound to Toronto. The derailment was in the town of New Hamburg... The extent of the injuries was as reported... hot coffee... Could have been much worse... I was right, it was the GEXR line that it was travelling on that goes...

    VIA Derailment

I just saw this. Any word on what equipment was involved? If it was in Waterloo/Kitchener, it sounds like the same line that the Amtrak trains run on that go through Stratford... the GEXR line...

    Experience with the Appalacian Central

Having personally seen the Peco turnouts in action, my vote is going with them rather than the atlas... The spring-held action works very well for manual operation, that can easily be upgraded to turn machines at a later date... Whereas with the Atlas ones, you need to go to switch machines...

    Modelling an N-Scale SD75I

Thanks for those pics of your kitbash... certainly helpful for me... I'm now looking for an SD70Mac... and probably an Atlas SD60...

Your opinions of rolling stock brands

Catt! Do you immerse them in alcohol, pour, or rub? The alcohol is pretty much household... although I'd have to look around for stronger concentrations... Helpful info though...

    Experience with the Appalacian Central

Thanks for the feedback! Very helpful! I haven't had the time yet, but I am going to see what I can do with RTS. The trouble is, the actual Appalachian Central uses Peco turnouts, which include the curved turnouts... which atlas does not make... Maybe I can download cadrail or 3rdplanit... :)

Your opinions of rolling stock brands

What do you recommend to actually strip the thick paint off of these models? I want to be careful not to end up with a big pile of plastic ooze

Bombardier bi-levels on eastern commuter service

I got into the Bombardier site. Despite being Canadian, much of their rail stuff is used extensively in Europe. Their Bi-Level coaches are used in North America only though... In terms of "East" Toronto's GO Transit and Florida's Tri-rail are the only ones that make use of it. Curiously...

Bombardier bi-levels on eastern commuter service

They're definitely used in the Toronto cooridor (GO Train), which I suppose is Eastern, but it is Canadian as well. They seem to be in use in Dallas (TRE)... and Florida (TriRail)... I can't get into the Bombardier site to confirm if there are any other Northeastern US customers.

    Experience with the Appalacian Central

So did I... You need to do some digging and find the track plan to the Devil's Creek Company. which is a modification of the original Appalachian Central. The differences are with what appears at the top of the plan. In the original AC, the divider is brought forward a bit, and the two...

    Experience with the Appalacian Central

I've looked on google, and the only online trackplans based on the Appalachian Central have varied it too much to cross post to do the original any justice. If you're in a model RR shop, nab the Project Railroads you can Build off the shelf and have a quick look at it. What you need to know...

    Experience with the Appalacian Central

Hey All, I recently acquired Kalmbach Books MR Series "Project Railroads you can Build" which includes the N-Scale Appalacian Central series by Lionel Strang. I showed it (benchwork to final) to my wife, and actually got a favourable response... I could do this as my first layout! Does...

    1'*8' N-gauge Yard

Squirrel... interesting yard design... although isn't the yard lead a bit short to switch the longest stretch in the stub yard? Although I suppose you could run switching through the roundhouse...
