    Microtrains Coupler Installation

Well, with the advice I found here, I now have one of my GP9rm's upgraded to MT couplers. I had to use 2 shims on the rear fitting just to get it into place... but the other one didn't seem to need it. However, in retrospect, it probably does, because it appears to have room to "slide" downward...

    Microtrains Coupler Installation

I've not tried it yet, but at least now I have enough couplers to do all three of my GP9rms... I'll let you know how it goes... The next task is to try to actually do the uncoupling once they're installed...

    Microtrains Coupler Installation

Cool! Thanks! I do have 2 sets of mini-screwdrivers that I can do this with. Do I pop it out using a prying method just above the metal spring clip? I'm just a little worried about bending/breaking stuff... Usual first-time jitters...

Unitrack and reversing loops in DCC

Being the post-Christmas blitz, I've been developing possible track plans using Kato's Unitrack system. For a newbie like me, it's been great, because I can set up and take down possible track configurations and arrangements as easily as I change my socks. I can see what works, and what...

    New DCC Systems

Well... since I'm running N-scale, and am not likely to operate more than 5 locos at any given time even with consists that should be fine. I tried acquiring a Prodigy Express on a sale at my LHS, but alas, they had sold out because everybody else thought it was a good idea too... One...

    Microtrains Coupler Installation

I just acquired in a post-Christmas sale the starter kit for Microtrains Magnematic coupler system. So far of my locomotives and rolling stock, I have 1 locomotive and 4 intermountain cars that are already fitted with the MT couplers. In all I have 6 more locomotives that are fitted with either...

    New DCC Systems

Hi All, My lurker status continues, but now that I have moved into a new house in Mississauga, the reality of my first layout is an ever increasing possibility. I have approximately a 15' stretch of wall that I can run a shelf layout along, with room for a dog-bone style turns at the end. It...

    Canadian National Diesels???

I've been building up my collection of CN diesels for my beginner's layout. So far I have 2 Life Like GP9RM's... they come in 3 different schemes with six possible road numbers... so there is some flexibility there. Only downside is that they come with rapido couplers that you'll need to...

    First Layout Design...

I tried the Xtrkcad download, but I don't think even the latest open source version works on Windows XP... The basics of track placement would disappear every time I tried to put track down... Either that or I downloaded a buggy copy...

    First Layout Design...

MinnMonkey, I've been investigating using Kato Unitrack as well... What software are you using to produce this rather nice looking track plan?

    An interesting walk!

Mike... they've been building those new Locos at the plant here in London. I was up in Stratford last week, and there were a pair of those resting in the GEXR yard, evidently on some sort of test run. They're very nice and shiny... :)

    Track drawing software?

Mike, For your layout and its immense size and levels, you'd almost be better off going with 3rd PlanIt, which can include lots of room for scenery... I've downloaded the test version of it, and the tutorial is really easy to follow and work through... It's been on my list of things to...

    Windfall... How lucky is this??

I believe it does... Although I'm not quite sure how it is used, as there is not obviously a throttle on it. As for the rest of the layout, it is still a question of money and space. My wife and I live in a townhouse condominium, which has very little in the way of free space. At best, I...

    Windfall... How lucky is this??

I've not posted for a while... simply being a lurker at the moment as I continue to negotiate for space for a layout :) Well, that, and there's not a great deal the way our house is currently configured. I've been collecting N-Scale materials, books, track, etc. for a short while now as I am...

    Calgary Transit

Nutz... looks like my post describing the history of the C-Train got lost in the crash... Mind you, so did the original question... Someone asked if the C-Train actually ran along any Calgary streets. It does, but only in one location: 7th Ave SW. The downtown street was devoted...

    A question about CAD

I downloaded the demo of it some time ago, but sat down with the tutorial to get a handle on how things worked. Once that was in place, I found myself pulling together yards and such reasonably quickly, and longing for a version that I could actually save my work. As such, 3rd PlanIt will be a...

    CN On Strike

There are more details in an article from the Globe and Mail , but it appears that about 5,000 of CN's 22,000 employees have gone on strike. The dispute is with the Canadian Auto Workers, whose members provide customer service, safety inspections, repairs to trains and rail cars, and manual...

    Top secrete

Those would have been unpainted SD90Macs coming from the GM Electromotive Division in London, Ontario... just north of where I live... I remember them being built and periodically sitting outside the plant last year...

    Redesigning the Appalachian Central Yard

Thanks Brakie, and thanks SS for the suggested redesigns of the yard. I think what I may do, assuming I can pull together a bit of time this week is use the demo version of 3rd PlanIt to create some alternate configurations of the yard, and use screenshots to actually post some pics of it here...

    Redesigning the Appalachian Central Yard

SS: I'm liking this second design as a distinct possibility. I'm still wondering about a yard lead... Also, a legitimate newbie question on the caboose track: is one necessary on layouts modelling modern era? I realize that many yards would still have them as a holdover from an earlier era. The...
