    Truro Junction Layout in Progress!

Here's a link to a video of my first train operating on the layout. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KeA74Cxy5U All told I'm pretty happy. I'm using the passenger train to help with curves and turnouts... because if they can handle it, everything else can.

    Truro Junction Layout in Progress!

I had thought about it, but I decided that whatever staging yard I would end up with would be a type where I construct the respective trains, and then feed them into the staging yard before a given operating session. During the operating Session in question, access to the yard would only be...

    Truro Junction Layout in Progress!

Woohoo! My layout is not only started... it's actually in progress... I've been trying to plan out how my layout might look by playing around with the Unitrack I have... which included building a yard. So far so good... I also ran a passenger train around to test a few things out. Here's the...

    whats the best riser hight?

I'm eagerly awaiting a similar answer... Woodland Scenics themselves suggest a 2" riser... but I think that's normally associated with HO scale. I'm thinking of doing a 2" myself, but I can't really make up my mind at this point... so I'd be glad to hear what others say.

    Test Unitrack Yard

I'll try and get you a picture as soon as I have the rest of the foam glued down (hopefully tonight)...

??? for you guys that use foam...

I'm at the same stage you're at Ozzy... just laying down my foam. Given that you have a 4x8' table, you probably won't need to go as steep as 4% grades. When I was doing some test fitting on my yard, I put a locomotive on a piece of unitrack beside 2 layers of 1" foam. The 2" easily gives...

    Test Unitrack Yard

Actually, my concern is more that the mainline will look too track heavy, given that I think my original hope was to make this primarily a single-track-with-sidings style of layout. The curves of the track just in front of the camera will feed into both the staging yard, as well as be the point...

    Test Unitrack Yard

Well, my benchwork is up, as I mentioned in another thread, and I'm finally starting to glue down pink foam as my overall base. However, I couldn't resist before getting it all down and starting slapping some track together to see how it might look. I have a very rough trackplan idea, but...

Seeking N Scale Undecorated Kato f40ph's

Quick question on stripping... I'm an experienced miniature painter for 1/48 scale miniatures using hand brush rather than airbrush. I use a hobby-style primer that shrinks to the detail of the miniature, and is very good. It's black in colour... would it adequately cover up the Kato paint job...

Seeking N Scale Undecorated Kato f40ph's

I'm curious too... I'm very much in the market for one of these... I even have the VIA rail F40PH decals at home ready to go :p

    Benchwork is finally up!

Whoa... I guess I've been out of the loop for a while! When's the train show? I have another commitment on Saturday in Stratford, but I'd like to get out to a train show if at all possible. Let me dig around and see if I can find the event before you tell me what it is! :P Edit: Just found it...

    Benchwork is finally up!

Well, some three years after having been re-bitten by the model-railroading bug, I finally managed to get some benchwork up. My wife, daughter and I live in a townhouse condominium, so space is a premium, and I also suffer from a distinct lack of powertools. The only item I have is a power...

    New RR under construction

If you're working with Ikea, may I make a suggestion that you look at the newer GORM storage Shelving system? I'm going to be building my benchwork out of that... lots of shelving space... VERY solid... shelves can hold 50kg (about 110 lbs) each. It can also be attached in any configuration you...

Feedback for New Layout -CN & CBCNS

Masonjar... I appreciate your comments, and your caution will certainly come into play. Fortunately, since this is my first layout, I am building it with Kato Unitrack, so I can set up and take down different combinations before committing myself to something I have to glue or nail down before I...

Feedback for New Layout -CN & CBCNS

Here's a diagram of how the shelving should come together: I am planning to use Ikea's GORM shelving units, which screw and bolt together, as opposed to the IVAR units which are primarily held together by gravity: The larger Green blocks are shelving units that are 51cm (20") deep by 77cm...

Feedback for New Layout -CN & CBCNS

Sorry, I should have said... this is an N-Scale plan... 5'x12' I'm primarily using Kato Unitrack :) Does that make a difference?

    Would you go DCC if..?

I have the Prodigy Express... It's great for a small sized layout, plus it is expandable if you want to go that way...

Feedback for New Layout -CN & CBCNS

I'm looking at possibly doing some lift-out sections to access the staging area... or having it accessible via the back by pulling the layout away from the wall in case of a major underground derailment. There's not a great deal of clearance between the A-Yard in truro (on the left hand side)...

Feedback for New Layout -CN & CBCNS

I know I have posted a couple layout design possibilities here before, but since I now know my benchwork, I decided to call in a bit of help. Siderod did this design for two reasons... 1. He's more experienced at this sort of thing that I am, but secondly he happens to live in the area that I...

    Start Voltage??

Start voltage is simply the CV to ensure that your locomotive starts moving when your throttle reaches a value of something greater than 0. It has no effect on speed otherwise. Matching speeds comes more from mid range voltage and top voltage... If you really want to get fancy you can apparently...
