    On Track, with Deano

SWEET! She still looks great, but I wish they hadn't changed the trucks out to those Blomberg "M"'s. The WP had standardized on Blomberg "B" trucks from trade in units on ALL of their EMD and GE road power. Sometime in the mid 80's, apparently, she had her trucks changed, probably the result...

    Ugly throwbar

I agree, traffic comes and goes in waves, but I check out several other forums, and most of the others are so hateful and arrogant, I never post. This one on the other hand, has always been an extreme pleasure. No fighting, arguing, arrogance, foul remarks, snobs or anything else. Here, Tyco...

    Ugly throwbar

Also too, on a high stand switch, if you can see the target facing you, it is *supposed* to mean that the switch is lined for diverging route. If you are staring down the long end of the target (in other words, it is in line with your line of sight from the movement), it is *supposed to be*...

    Ugly throwbar

It's *supposed to be*, but stuff happens. I got my first (and since then, ONLY) "ran through" switch when I was an 18 year old engineer, because I relied on the target of a high stand switch to show indication. BIG MISTAKE (and why I always preach to my students to NEVER rely on the target...

    Reminiscing-First Train Set

Yeah, mine was one of these: I liked the Tyco gold colored ones better as a kid as they had a direction switch and lever instead of knob. Easier for 4 year old fingers to work.

    Reminiscing-First Train Set

No, it was powder blue with a yellow knob for speed control. I have had dozens of those brown Bachmann ones over the years and usually used them to power lights and accessories, mounting the packs under the layout benchwork and plugging them into power strips.

    Reminiscing-First Train Set

Mine was bought for my 4th Christmas in 1979 by my Grandfather. It was the Bachmann "Bullet" with "Illustrachrome" ATSF F-9. I still have the engine and caboose in my display cabinet, but the engine doesn't run anymore. Dad on the other hand, had two large 55 gallon cardboard barrels (WP used...

    Ugly throwbar

Out of respect for one of my best clients, I'd rather not mention names, but it is a large LPG plant near Bakersfield, CA. They built that yard with 133 pound welded rail, concrete ties, #8 switches and large ballast. It looks better than the BNSF mainline next door which runs 79MPH Amtrak...

    Ugly throwbar

Hey Steve, what is direly missing on those Atlas turnouts is a pair of "Headblocks". Those are two very long (usually 16') ties, one on either side of the throwbar (which are steel on the prototype, but you probably knew that already). I'd cut the other two molded on ties off and add scale...

    Weekly Photo Fun 10-3

Well, since we are on the theme of "F" Units... Gail McClure, Director, Feather River Rail Society took what I think to be one of the neatest pics I have seen in a long time. This was UP's "Mini-Train" engine on one of our museum flatcars getting tied down before we took it with our train...

    Weekly Photo Fun 9-26

Thanks Deano, fighting insomnia tonight, so I think I'll use the time productively, plug the headphones into the stereo here, rock out, and design a photo diorama. I already have an idea in my head for a double track main with a branchline that comes off the main and runs down the middle of the...

    Weekly Photo Fun 9-26

Since the layout is once again stored in the garage crated up, I reallly need to get me one of them slick photo diorama set ups like Deano has. I think I'll design one this week while I have the time off from work. In the mean time, I got a few of my favorites out on the test track after a...

SWEEEEEEET. Love photos of the Zephyr getting serviced. Judging by the Yellow headend car, Rio Grande Zephyr rather than California Zephyr?? Sure hope they had that near track blue flagged!

Hey Jeffrey, nice haul on that WP Flatcar, I wasn't aware that Bachmann made any WP cars. I'll have to keep an eye out for one of those.

    Need Athearn re-motor advice please

Thanks a bunch, that DOES look really promising! Pretty clever in fact, and definitely something of interest, however, it doesn't cure my initial problem of those Athearn motors drawing too much current for DCC and needing to re-motor all together. Any ideas on a decent motor for that?

    On Track, with Deano

Deano, nice shot of the UP 9993. That is the former WP 3559, the last locomotive bought by the Western Pacific, my favorite road. Here's the pride of my collection, UP 3552, an Athearn Blue Box unit re-powered with a Mashima can motor. I need to get DCC in this thing.

    Need Athearn re-motor advice please

Hey guys, I am new to DCC, and have a sizeable fleet of Athearn units that I have either custom painted and detailed or had custom painted and detailed. I was given the opportunity to meet a new friend and run on his GORGEOUS WP layout (very large mushroom style) this past weekend. He lives...

A Money Making Idea That Keeps Popping Into My Head

Liability insurance for things like that really seem like a headache, BUT, it is worth it in the end. Alicia and I do Old West Gunfighter shows, and to see the looks on little kids faces, especially when the museum has the Mini Train at one of their events, is worth ALL the hassle. I say go...
