    Indianapolis International Airport in 1:400

I decided the front of the facade might look a little better if I added some depth to it using layers of card. I had originally intended to paint all of this detail on a flat surface. The vertical raised panels will be groups of 3 columns. I figured in 1:400 scale that cutting out the individual...

    Indianapolis International Airport in 1:400

And here is the Administration Building in all its glory... standing alone and set in place next to the still-incomplete main terminal landside, with a view of the real thing for comparison. I'm starting to consider now the mechanics of actually rendering this in paper in 1:400 scale... the...

All bridge ramps which will connect the parking garage to the main terminal are now complete: pedestrian sky bridges A, B-C, and D, along with the bypass road entrance and exit ramps. There was a bypass road which split off from the main road into the Departures section of the terminal, which...

Temporary mockup put in place to show location of outer wall of landside facility. Skybridge A fully modeled. B-C (one bridge serving two concourses) and D roughed in but not fully shaped. The walkways slope downward from the parking garage to the terminal, from parking garage level 3 to...

    Indianapolis International Airport in 1:400

Modeling continues. Starting on the main landside portion of the terminal, containing the ticketing and baggage areas. I want to have each section of the building as its own separate Sketchup file. But at some point I am going to want to place the parking garage and main terminal together in...

[R] Special type Rnh wagon for acid transport 1:25 scratch

How did you make all of the brake rigging on the underside? Brake cylinders, control valves, slack adjusters, and all that? Is that all paper? These components are all very similar to what is found on US freight cars even today. Do those parts actually move? And was this a kit or a model you...

My aircraft fleet consists primarily of DC-9s/MD-80s, 727s, 737s, 757s, and the A319/A320 family, as far as the passenger side of things goes. But select gates at this terminal will be able to accommodate aircraft ranging up to DC-10 or L-1011 size. FedEx also has a hub here (second only to...

And here we have the entrance/exit ramps built and attached. The ramps extend above the top of the garage because they were intended to accommodate a further expansion of the garage which never materialized. The parking garage itself is now complete as far as the 3D design goes. I do have a...

    Indianapolis International Airport in 1:400

I'm only going to be making the (old) terminal and surrounding area, including parts of Runway 23R and 14/32. No lighting effects are planned at this time. And some fine details may be omitted for the sake of being able to handle without breakage. This display will be designed to be taken apart...

By the way, how could I go about making the awning over the shuttle bus stop area? The real one was made of vacuum-formed transparent blue plastic panels (roughly 3 feet square) attached to steel trusses, as shown here.

Very good point about allowing for the paper thickness. Is there a reference table anywhere that lists the dimensional thickness in terms of paper weight? Also how much extra backing do I need to add in order to get a good effect in 1:400 scale? I'm thinking I might also apply this same...

    Indianapolis International Airport in 1:400

Oooh, I like that idea a lot! How would that do on forming the curves though? They're not super tight (the inner arc is a 138 foot radius, or roughly 4 inches actual) but curve smoothly through 75 degrees of arc so it's important to avoid kinking.

The parking garage is starting to come together in Sketchup! I have the main shell done, as well as lowering the top deck by 3'6" to create the parapet around the edge, and I've also constructed the three stair/elevator houses by marking out their locations on the deck then using the push/pull...

[R] Special type Rnh wagon for acid transport 1:25 scratch

Great work! Meanwhile, here is how acid is hauled by rail today... http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=332953 Imagine this in 1:25 scale! 20,675 gallon (70,254 liter) capacity. Approximately 50 feet long (unlike boxcars and flatcars, tank car sizes are normally defined by...

    Indianapolis International Airport in 1:400

Sketchup is what I'm interested in using, actually... Just a quick note... what you have labeled as the "stair/elevator houses" are actually the helical ramps that allow cars to drive in and out of the garage. Notice that the top of the road deck forms a ramp that curves around and under...

I'm new here - want to build an airport terminal

That would actually be the reverse of the process I'm doing. I started with a Google Earth image and am redrawing it to bring everything to exact dimensions and bring in details (markings, etc.) that didn't show up in the original low-res image.

    Indianapolis International Airport in 1:400

So... how would I go about making this parking garage? I already worked out the dimensions in a plan view. Keep in mind this will be a 1:400 scale model; it'll be roughly a foot by a foot and a half overall just to give you an idea. I broke the plan geometry down into 3 parts... a 75-degree arc...

    Indianapolis International Airport in 1:400

I am starting on a 1:400 scale model of the old Indianapolis International Airport to display my diecast airliner collection spanning over 50 years of my home airport's history. I haven't started working on the buildings yet but I would like to use paper/card construction. I do have an...

I'm new here - want to build an airport terminal

Here are a couple of images of what I've done so far. This is just the graphics for the base... the modeled portion of the airport will be 6x8 feet. I haven't started drawing the actual buildings yet except for the footprints marked out to show the location in order to aid in assembly. The...

I'm new here - want to build an airport terminal

I'm new here... looking to build a model of the old (1966-2008) Indianapolis International Airport terminal and landside facilities to display my 1:400 scale diecast model collection. I want to design and build this model from scratch and I am just looking for some basic suggestions on how to...
