Any repowering ideas for an Athearn GP38-2?

Update: I got to looking again, and it's not a Sagami as previously thought! It's actually a NWSL branded motor, 16x30mm, double shaft. I'll likely pick it up next time I'm at the hobby shop, as I think a good 5 pole like that would really help this thing purrrrrr.

So I have a 8-40CW sitting on my desk...

I think we have a winner! http://railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=23558 In a year or two when it's finished (Yeah, it just might take me that long) I'll be sure to post pictures. :D

So I have a 8-40CW sitting on my desk...

I picked up a new RPP 8-40CW body shell from my local hobby shop to replace a screwed up shell from a project I was working on years ago... it's sitting on the RPP chassis, with Athearn trucks and a Sagami motor. I've just put P:87 40" wheelsets on it, and now I need to decide what locomotive...

Any repowering ideas for an Athearn GP38-2?

Current draw is not an issue to me. I want smoothness, and slow minimum speed would be nice too.

Any repowering ideas for an Athearn GP38-2?

Well, that kit is $31.95, and shipping is probably extra... so it's not really much cheaper than the Sagami + flywheels.

Any repowering ideas for an Athearn GP38-2?

I was more worried about the Mashima motor not measuring up to the Sagami. I have an older A-line kit that came with a Sagami flatside motor in a RPP 8-40CW, and it is NICE. So I guess it's a tossup then. Since the Little Choo Choo Shop has the Sagami and flywheels in stock, I may just pick...

Any repowering ideas for an Athearn GP38-2?

So installation and "kit convenience" aside, would that A-line motor be a better runner than the Sagami can motor?

Any repowering ideas for an Athearn GP38-2?

I've got one of these that I'm superdetailing (Everything from firecracker antennas to P87 wheelsets!) and I have considered replacing the Athearn motor with something better. Anybody have any ideas? It's going to be used for probably a couple years on DC before I can get a DCC system. I saw a...

New layout, decided to go with NO roadbed

Hey, that's what I'm doing! Although instead of foam on plywood, I have 2" of foam over a 1x2 frame, and the Atlas C55 track directly on the foam. I do have scraps of 1/8" plywood underneath each switch motor to act as a firm mounting surface tho.

What do you use to power Circuitron Tortises? (Also, Atlas C55 + Circuitron!)

Yesterday I finished fastening the first of several Circuitron Tortises to the underside of the blue foam scenery of my N scale C&O layout. I glued a piece of 1/8" aircraft plywood between the top and second layers of blue foam to have an attachment point for the switch motor. I applied 12V...

Any N C&O modelers in the house?

What?! LL is doing that model in N now!? Let me at it! BTW, I have lots o pix of the G-consols, but I'm just not sure how much of a stickler for detail I want to be. It will at least take removing the sand dome and replacing it with a smaller one further forward. Then the side walkways...

Any N C&O modelers in the house?

Tyson. I'm currently in the Triad area, but soon moving to Cullowhee. Maybe we can meet up for operating sessions sometime. I have some Southern equipment of that era. A G7 is a C&O class of Consolidation. There's a few visual differences that need to be addressed before I'll decal it as a...

Any N C&O modelers in the house?

New to this forum, saying hello! My current project is a freelanced dead-end branchline representing a fictional WV town. I'm looking for ideas for turning a Spectrum Consolidation into a G7 or G9 as it would have appeared towards the end of its service life.
