I followed the link but didn't see any Appalacian Central.

What Is The Minimum Radius for a Helix??

A 22" radius is the largest I can fit in, but I think that should suffice. Now...how do you make a helix? I was thinking of suspending it from the framing on the benchwork with some all thread and nuts located at the appropriate heights. But, do you just use the same plywood you would on...

    New N Scale BNSF Layout

Hehehe...I guess people are tired of my track plan posts...not many bites on this one. Anyway, today at work I played around a little bit with a scenery plan just to kind of show everyone what I have in mind for this new track plan. The picture below is kind of crude, but I...

    Experience with the Appalacian Central

Agatheron, I see you are still struggling with a track plan like I am. ;) I am not familiar with that plan, but if I were to do it I would do whatever possible to broaden those curves. Even if your equipment can handle it, the long cars you plan to run won't look good on curves that tight...

What Is The Minimum Radius for a Helix??

I come up with the same numbers you do for an 18" curve on a 2% grade. Hmmmm....I could easily change the benchwork to allow for up to about 22" radius. By my calculations, that would be approximately 138" per "loop", dropping 2.875" per loop on a 2% grade. I think this would be mo' better...

    New N Scale BNSF Layout

Now...just to make things TOTALLY confusing I went and added a branch line going to a helix which will then take trains down to a big staging yard. The lower part where the helix is and the flood loader is all looks like a heaping mass of confusion, but if you follow the tracks and note...

Thanks. The neighborhood is okay if you're a suburb kind of guy. I'm a country boy. The neighbors are great, but I prefer acreage and fresh air. ;)

What Is The Minimum Radius for a Helix??

I'm going to be putting a helix in my layout (see photos in sig) to go down to a hidden staging area underneath. What radius is a good radius for a helix? I can easily fit an 18" radius in now, but can go bigger if I make some adjustments to the benchwork. I anticipate the second deck being...

Not Australia....Texas. And, it's not an entry door, it's a door that opens up to the closet that the hot water heater is located in. Local codes requires that gas hot water heaters in the garage be a minimum of 18" off the ground. :)

If you are it's just a case of layout envy....with that huge layout you've got and all. ;) Actually, I just never could come up with a track plan I was happy with on the other benchwork.

    Starting Over

Not really...not without cutting a hole in the brick too. It could be done of course, but I'm not sure how well it would work or what it would do for the resale value of my house. I plan to deal with the expansion/contraction problems by leaving gaps in the straight sections for this to...

Just curious, what camera are you using

Same here. Great camera, great lens, able to be fully auto or all manual...works well for me.

    New N Scale BNSF Layout

Good point on the lift out and track. I guess I hadn't really thought about the track aspect of it...just the wood aspect. It will be quite a while before I consider myself senior, but there may be occasions where I have senior visitors. I make take an old chair and put casters on...

    New N Scale BNSF Layout

I suppose I could use something to hide the tighter radius. Something to look into I suppose. I could easily install a liftout on the new benchwork. In fact, that was something I considered. My other thought was a low rolling stool....just sit down and slide right under without any bending...

Progress Photos on the BNSF Whitehead Sub

For those following my posts you know that not only did I recently begin a new layout, but that yesterday I decided to trash it and start all over. So, out with the OLD... And in with the NEW!! I managed to completely disassemble the above benchwork (screw by screw) and build part of...

    New N Scale BNSF Layout

Thanks for the comments everyone. Hemiadda2d, I know what you're talking about on the flood loaders. I basically have to make a choice between a longer mainline run or having the flood loader off by itself. I could separate the flood loading track from the main more by making its radius...
