    Coupler Issues

I have also found a little puff of graphite or light weight oil into the Kadee coupler pocket goes a long way to helping them center better. In some cases I have also found I had secured the mounting screw too tight, binding the coupler. Backing off a quarter turn usually helped. I agree with...

    Adding diesel hoses question

you can get most of the MU hoses off without sanding by using a chisel blade in an X-acto knife. With the blade held bevel side down, you can get most, if not all the molded in details off without damaging the model. I've done it many times and it works well.

    After 15yrs,whats new?

Well, in my opinion, the biggest thing to hit model railroading in the last 15 years has to be DCC. Controling the trains digitally means much more realism and ease in running trains. Wiring of the layout is much simpler, too. Probably the hardest thing is to add decoders to the locomotives...

    Interest rekindled

I have found from time to time I just need a break. Consequently, advancements on my layout seem to be in fits and spurts. I'm getting to the point where there's at least some scenery on the entire layout, so I try to take time just to watch the trains go 'round. I have one major section to...

    Trains and wives

So true!! My wife has given me free reign of the bonus room as my "Man Cave", of which my model railroad takes up over half. While she would love a guest bedroom, she's never even once hinted I should take down my layout. She's been nothing but supportive of my model railroading and my show...

Snow looks so beautiful just as it falls. It's the days and weeks afterward I don't miss.

    Model Tech Kit Experience

It doesn't say what the material is. Is it plastic or plaster? I love building craftsman kits. I typically use a base-coat of paint that is a little lighter than the finished color. In this case a beige, let's say, for the stucco. Then from there I use washes of highly diluted paint (in...

Wow, that is sharp looking. And it sounds like you got a heck of a deal. You'll have to let us know how it runs.:thumb:

    Modelling in different scales?

I model primarily HO, but about 15 years ago I joined an N gauge club. I went N-gauge because it was easier to transport the smaller trains. Now when I get the urge to run N-gauge, I set up my Kato Unitrack for a couple of days, then take it down and put it away for another month. I may make...

    OT: Middle Age Attacks!

I just turned 40 and my blood pressure's been borderline for a while. I gave up the health club for a year while my wife took time off to finish her Masters degree and packed on a few pounds. Combine that with an underactive thyroid, and my weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol went up...

    decoders

DorkmasterFlek is pretty much correct, but I've found that some decoders are more compatible than others, even though they are supposed to follow the same NMRA conventions. Particularly among older decoders you might find discounted in hobbyshops or on eBay. Overall, I like the Digitrax and...

    Giving up might be cheaper

Kinda reminds me of the time I asked both of my Brothers-in-Law to help paint. Absolutely every window was painted shut, and I wound up having to re-do whatever they did. I know I asked for help, but I didn't know I was getting the Marx Brothers.announce1

Does anyone read the Walthers Catalog anymore?

I've got one of the Anniversary editions that is permanently moored beside my bedside table. I think I also have two more earlier copies in my bonus room. I'd much rather browse through a paper book than browse an online-catalog. And this from someone who loves computers and the internet.:)

    New model railroaders?

I think it's important to at least plant the seeds and see what comes out of it. Let's face it. How many of us started out with true model grade equipment? I certainly didn't. And while I had a train set as a kid, I didn't get into what we call model railroading until I was in my mid...

    Walthers & wood structure kits...

The LHS I used to frequent (local meaning 40 minutes away) just closed a week or so ago. Business was good, they had some family issues that were more important and couldn't find a competent buyer. If I had alternatives, I would use them. When I travel I usually stop by a model railroad hobby...
