    BSNF demoted to helper

Actually, that's an interesting shot. There seems to be a panel, just behind the cab before the first stanchion, that's still painted with the red warbonnet scheme. I'm assuming it's a replacement panel. What do you think?

    That's using your noodle.

    How close is too close?

The engineer probably thought you were too close, or was trying to cover himself, just in case. At any rate, those engines are enormous and at 10 feet they seem huge. A train club I used to belong to was housed in an old CSX building, probably no more than 15-16 feet from the tracks. The...

    Crossing The Potomac (Graphic Intensive)

Nice shots, Taylor. I'm a bit of an armature photographer, myself. I particularly like the shot of the trestle (second to last). Nicely framed. If you ever get a chance to travel down Rte 301, there's a power plant at the end of the Potomac where they still use an old RS-1 to shuffle coal...

Long Island Railroad Passenger Train*Pic Heavy*

That looks like the South Shore of LI. I grew up around Lake Ronkonkoma and move out to the North Fork in my college years. The end of the line there culimnated in a turntable in Greenport. It hadn't been used for years by the time I lived there, but my boss who was probably 20 years older than...

    A real challenge to me.

Have you considered an ultrasonic cleaner such as this?: Tools and Supplies for Building Scale Models | Micro-Mark: The Small Tool Specialists It seems to me, beyond the environmental concerns, that it's your rolling stock depositing crud on the tracks. If you could eliminate the source, perhaps...

    your milage may vary

The first post is very interesting in that, using the calculator, the rates are based not so much by mile, but by intermodal unit. I typed in various cities and the rates were all based on a 20 foot container (IMU). It seems weight has little to do with it, except that each container has a...

Light Rail trains in N scale

ER models made an articulated Talgo set in Amtrak livery in both N-gauge and HO. I have the HO set (two actually) and they are very nicely done. While the original head end cars were powered, they were converted here to run behind diesel locomotives like the F40ph or F59phi. Walthers had them...

new engines being added to my rock island fleet!

I have a lot of the Proto N locomotives. They run well, I have no complaints. I'm sure you'll like them.:thumb:

    Do i really need DCC

For one engine at a time, no you don't need DCC. When you start adding engines, or multiple trains is when DCC starts to shine. It also lets you do some nice effects with lighting and you can also operate features like lights or switches on the layout. My N-gauge stuff is just standard DC...

    Frustrated with a Athrean Loco

You know, that's an excellent idea. They are indeed interchangeable, so there's no reason they couldn't be swapped out. Thanks for the tip.:thumb:

    Frustrated with a Athrean Loco

Also check that the motor is still isolated from the frame. Athearn motors have two tabs sticking out of the lower half of the motor that are used to ground the motor to the frame in DC mode. I cut those off and lay down a layer or two of electrical tape to keep the motor from touching the...

    Customer Service Or Lack Of

Well, for the other side of the spectrum, I really have to commend Loys Toys for their customer service. I shipped off a Proto 2000 to them to do a Soundtraxx decoder installation. While it took a while (they were waiting on Soundtraxx to ship the decoder), there was always someone there to...

    Size of decoder?

To expound upon UP SD40-2's response, you can also use a decoder meant for a smaller scale if space is at a premium. I had to resort to using an N-scale decoder on a particularly tight HO loco. It works fine. The loco isn't one likely to see any huge loads and so a 1 amp decoder was fine. In...

did everyone stop playing with trains for the summer........?

I have a hard time seeing Iowa as being humid. I live on the Chesapeake bay and grew up on Long Island where if you left your shoes on the floor too long they'd turn green. Humidity is just something I've never associated with Iowa.

RECALL - Thomas Wooden Railway Toys

My Wife's a teacher and a couple of years ago she had to throw away all the crayons in her class because of lead. I think we ended up spending something like $60 getting new crayons for her classroom.

Got an Airbrush for my b-day

Yep, been there, done that. Come to think of it, I still do from time to time. You do get better at it. I have several air brushes. A couple are Badger brushes that have enclosed jars. It does make it a bit cleaner, but after using a cup, I've gotten a lot more conscious of where the...

RECALL - Thomas Wooden Railway Toys

Thanks for the heads-up. I checked my daughter's stash and we don't seem to have any of the offending pieces. You would think at this point in history they would have just done away with lead paint.

    Coming In August!!

I was just watching a video on Challenger 3985 this weekend. I love to pop train videos in while I work on my layout. That's some impressive engine. Either way, it looks like you'll have a great opportunity for some photos.
