    new freight building

Already got it.:thumb: I'm hoping to get to it this fall.

    Rod Stewart's layout

Those are some pretty interesting lists, with some equally interesting names. I would have never guessed some of the people on those lists were model railroaders. Just goes to show that celebrities are just people too. With bigger check books.

    Scratch building trucks

Wow, that's a lot of work. Thanks for the pictures and the excellent write-up. I don't build in O, nor do I use that type of truck, but I always enjoy seeing how people approach a modeling project. I look forward to your future installments.

    Kato 24815 Unijoiner

You're correct that the spare uni-joiners are for replacements. That's one of the nice things about Unitrack, a broken joiner doesn't mean a dud part. Unitrack turnouts are already power selecting. I can have a loco sitting on a siding, while another passes by, until I throw the switch...

Best Track for on carpet use?

I agree with CRed. Kato Unitrack is expensive, but from my experience (with n-scale, at least) very durable. The HO track seems comparable. My main interest is HO, but I have a lot of N-gauge from my days in a train club. So every once in a while I pull it all out, set up a unitrack layout...

    Dirty track and YOU

My layout's in a climate controlled bonus room, and the cats are banned. Not so much for dirt, as they like to get on the layout and walk around, toppling trees and knocking over rolling stock. I run DCC so a clean track is a must. I have a track cleaning car I run around every once in a...

    Concor Passenger Coupler Problems

My ConCor cars used to come apart all the time as well. I switched to microtrains trucks and the problem has mostly gone away. It still decouples if I have a loco with a unimate coupler vs a microtrains conversion.

    Atlas VO-1000

I don't have a decoder in mine, but the noise level doesn't seem to be too bad. I imagine with time it will quiet down as it gets broken in.

    Model these?

I love the house. None of my clients would ever go for it, though.

    Sidewalks?

I have recently been turned onto Scalescenes.com for printable stonework, etc. Have you considered something like this: Scalescenes.com - UT034 Roads and Sidewalks I have this set, and while it's not completely glued down yet, I can tell it looks really good.

    Magazine choice

I buy MRR and MRC whenever I get the chance, but not at the same time. I've never subscribed to either magazine. I find that they both have interesting articles, just not at the same time. One month MRR is more interesting, the next month it's MRC. Having said that, I prefer MRC overall.

    Nose Hand Grabs

I've had pretty good luck bending my own out of brass wire. I find the finer, the better. If the hole is too big for the wire, I use styrene rod to fill the hole, then re-drill for the wire. I'm not always accurate enough on my spacing or hole size (read, rarely) so a little thick CA glue...

    Decoder Problem?

Did you inadvertantly set your acceleration or starting voltage too high? I set the acceleration on one loco too high one time (thought I was setting another CV) and it would just sit there. The lights worked fine, but wouldn't move.

    Painting questions...

That's partly why I switched to Floquil. Being solvent based, it doesn't cake on the end of the airbrush leading to spitting. And I don't live in Arizona. Without experience, though, you can quickly ruin a model with solvent based paint. Having said that, Floquil has re-formulated their...

    Painting questions...

I would vote air brush as well. It's a bit intimidating at first, but once you get a little practice under your belt, you'll find it's actually easier to control the paint as opposed to a can. You don't need anything expensive to get your feet wet (pun intended), a simple external mix...

    Hello from Manitoba Canada

Welcome to the Forum. That sounds like a very interesting prototype you've chosen to model.:thumb:

    Weekend projects

I finished up two projects that have been sitting on my workbench since the spring. One was a Builders in Scale Lighthouse kit, and then I finally managed to get my Soundtraxx sound decoder installed in my Proto 2000 SD60. I still have to finish the brass SD45 I picked up, paint and assemble a...

    Model Power

I have their Pacific loco. It's alright. It's not a Kato or anything, but I think it does a pretty decent job.

harbinger of sad things to come?

I'm pretty new to the forum, and can't really say I know Shamus. But, after seeing some of his work, I can honestly say the loss of his expertise would be a shame. My In-Laws have a lot of health problems that keep them from doing what they love, too. My Mother In-Law, for example, loves to...
