    What do you read?

I have several books about passenger travel in the first half of the 20th century, particularly about the NYC, but there are similar books for almost any railroad. A more generic book that's a pretty hefty read is The trains We Rode By Lucius Beebe & Charles Clegg. It's a great read, with many...

    What season do you model?

I model the summer, but I've seen some fall layouts that look really good. There was one, I believe it was in RR Model Craftsman, that was set in late fall, with many bare trees, that was absolutely amazing.

I Just Finished Watching Polar Express

I love the movie, too. Tom Hanks is great. What's even more amazing is that he does most of the voices; The conductor, Santa, the Hobo, etc. I saw a show on how they did the animation and much of it was mapped off his body using what looked like ping pong balls. In other words, they had a...

    BNSF modelers!

Nice weathering job, Josh. Very subtle.

How do you buy scenic materials ?

It rather depends on what I'm doing. For ground cover I use shakers, with some of the coarser foam (bagged) applied by hand. For trees, I'll use the plastic armatures with clump foam from bags.

my N scale layout, gone!!!!! fire

Good thing you were home! Like others said, it could've been worse. Lost the entire house, or a loved one. At least you still have your O-gauge. Now you can focus on your loft layout. Good luck. From bad comes better.:thumb:

    The A-1

That's a pretty ambitious project. I wonder what new technologies, if any, they've incorporated into the new engine. There was a steam engine built in the early '80's in India. It ran on either propane or natural gas. If I remember correctly it was a 4-6-2. It was big and red, I remember...

Building a Canadian wooden grain elevator.

You guys are giving me inspiration to start my grain elevator kit from Cambel Scale Models. I've had it sitting in a box for about two years. Right now I'm almost done working on the CSM produce shed. I just love craftsman kits. Looks great.:thumb:

Drawing an accurate radius on benchwork

That's just what I did. I connected the straight sections to the curves much like using sectional track. I butted the sections together and use a short piece of plywood and screws to back up the joint.

    Kato Japan

You've got that right. I had on of the EF-58's once. It ran smooth as silk and was a super puller, too.

    I decided to keep lurking...

Heck, posting pics and telling tales is how we learn. I'd be lost without the experience of other modelers.

    Mounting roadbed & track

The door is a good idea, it's a very rigid framework. I used yellow glue to mount my roadbed (in HO) as well as my track. I had read that using yellow or white glue allowed you to reposition the track at a later date if necessary by wetting the glue and letting it soften. I'll be darned if it...

Ah, enjoy it. It sounds like a good job. Maybe someday you'll have your own shop.:thumb:

considering changing from HO to N

I agree with baldwinjl on all his points. Well spoken. But, I'd like to add my own perspective as well. I have both N as well as HO. I model primarily in HO, with a large (by my standards at least) permanent layout. I enjoy building craftsman structures and super detailing my locomotives. In...

GAAA! I killed it!! (Lighting issue.)

You might want to try a "daylight" lamp. Some companies call them by different names. They have a much warmer color. They cost a couple dollars more apiece, but the color rendering is much better. I have two florescent fixtures in my garage. I recently replaced one set of bulbs. The...

    Red Letter Day

Congratulations! I still have a couple of pieces of track to lay in an area without scenery yet. I just don't know how I want to lay out the town. As you get the terrain in, the layout will really take shape. Let the fun begin.:thumb:

    Amtrak Cascades NPCU

I have an entire train to paint, but can't find the decals. One of the members here on the forum is also doing the Cascades in N-gauge and has a lead on some custom decals. He PM'd me a while back and we just haven't hooked up. I need to get in touch with him. I am doing a car for car...
