Not perfect, but not bad for 1st try

Not bad at all, and you did it in 6 hours? I couldn't do that in a month. Very nice.:thumb:

    rivers

Not sure which "goop" you're using, but many times artist acrylics can be mixed in to add a bit of tint. Just a little bit goes a long way. You can pour it right over what you've done, it doesn't have to be very thick. You'll have to experiment on a paper plate with what paint your "goop" is...

    Soldering music wire...

Maybe I could make a recommendation from what I learned in the model airplane world. Obviously, the piano wire is steel and can't be soldered directly. In the model airplane world things like landing gear are many times made of steel wire, some of it pretty big. A trick I learned was to wrap...

    rivers

That's coming along nicely. You can also add a tint of color to the water which will further enhance the illusion of depth.

    If you like speed.

Great video. I'm an airplane nut myself, particularly as a kid. I could recite aircraft specs like most people could quote sports stats. Needless to say, it didn't get me any dates.

    Paper Decals

I use the computer to create signs and such all the time. I suppose a paper sign on the side of a panel truck would look OK, but for something more realistic I would use inkjet decal paper. There was a product available a few years ago which, when brushed on a paper picture and allowed to dry...

    getting a bli ac6000

I so much want to get an AC6000cw with sound and DCC.... That is such a sharp looking engine.

    rivers

I've had the best luck using paint, then following up with the Woodland Scenics liquid water. I start at the edges with a color that resembles the dirt from the region being modeled, then gradually getting darker to blue/ green (or whatever color the river your modeling is). After that dries I...

    Atlas Gold or Proto 2000?

I don't have any Atlas Gold engines, but I do have a Silver which is absolutely one of my favorite engines. I also have quite a few Proto 2000 engines. I don't think you could go wrong with either, although I think I would prefer the Atlas if given the choice. They're both powerful, heavy and...

what do non railroaders think of your layout?

That's actually good to hear. I miss my LHS. They closed down last year.

This hobby is trying to kill me...

I was helping a friend put a roof on his addition once. He invited a few others over to make the job go quicker. We were all pretty experienced in construction, so things were going well, until the last guy showed up. As he climbed on the roof, my friend asked if he had any experience...

what do non railroaders think of your layout?

I've never really had a negative reaction from people who've seen my layout. Most are rather impressed, if I may say so. The kids all love it, even if they're only there a few minutes. I've even had clients who were model railroaders ask to see the layout. It must be all the Art Deco train...

This hobby is trying to kill me...

Ouch, that's gotta hurt. I understand the "Protect the Kid at all costs" syndrome. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. I've found that the few times I've gotten hurt around the house it was for things I'm always talking to the kids about. Don't play with electricity. Watch the wet floor or...

    Cars/Trucks/Vehicles size suggestions

I don't use any of the Matchbox cars. They're just too big to my eye. I prefer Busch, Wiking, & Herpa, but I also have a smattering of the cheaper Walmart cars. Boley makes some reasonably priced vehicles as well. My favorites are the Ricko cars, and I recently picked up a couple of the new...

    Outstanding diorama

Wow, that's impressive. Not to mention BIG. The attention to detail is just amazing.

MR cover that got me serious about N-scale

Well, I have to admit, that's a little before my time (I was only two, but still had a railroad). My Dad bought some trains for me my first Christmas, and I still remember playing with them into my Teens. But, I still cut out pictures from the various magazines and pin them up on one wall of my...

    What do you read?

I hadn't realized Fine Scale Railroader went out of print, although now that you mention it, I haven't seen it in a while.

Advice on what structure models to avoid

Wow, lots of good responses, and all valid. I haven't seen the kits Nolatron was showing, but I'm going to have to try them out. To me, it all depends on your skill level. I started out with the plastic box kits. In fact, I just bought a plastic IHC kit I think is perfect for what I want...

I Just Finished Watching Polar Express

As a Literary Buff, I think I have to see Beowulf. I remember reading Beowulf in Olde Englishe (yeah, 30 years ago).

Thomas tank engine table I built

Not a bad job on the table at all. My daughter has a bunch of Thomas stuff (luckily none of the recalled stuff), but a bunch or the Recalled Dora the Explorer figures. As long as they don't put the things in their mouth, they should be fine. My daughter's six, so not much other than her...
