    Newkirk colliery 0-6-0

The junk scattered about the foot and running boards is very nice! Looks good! (Nice photos as well). Matt

History Channel - another Train Series!!!

Interesting. I can't conceive of a language becoming "fixed". Granted English borrows words right and left, but what about French and German keep new non-foreign words from being used, or existing words being used in different contexts? I.e., what caused them to become fixed? Curious, Matt

    22 gauge wire

I'll grant the more flexible comment, but I actually prefer the solid - for track feeders anyway. You can squish the wire end flat and bend it parallel to the track base - makes it stay in place well while soldering and keeps the profile low. Matt

    Digitrax or NCE?

Good choice - that's a solid piece of equipment. Matt

    Digitrax or NCE?

Yes. For all intents and purposes, a PowerCab is functionally identical to a ProCab. Pretty much correct. Don't overbuy on your latter point. I have a ProCab and in hindsight would have done just fine with a Powercab plus the Smart Booster (raises amperage available at the rail). If you're a...

    Bachmann GE 45 Tonner

I've always like these. It's amazing how much interest some visible moving parts add to an otherwise dull diesel... :) I'd consider one, but it's unfortunately they are too "young" for my 1930's railroad. :p

    Garage Door Animation

That's cool - but too much for me!

    Digitrax or NCE?

Three options to get you over the hump: Start installing decoders prior to buying the system. When you get to some critical mass of locomotives that are ready to run on DCC, buy the hardware. Just make sure you buy decoders that can recognize a DC signal. Most do (it is configurable on /...

    Digitrax or NCE?

I believe TrainNut is correct. I've had a Digitrax system (NCE now) and have run a decoderless locomotive on it before - not a worthwhile function in my mind. Control isn't great, and the motor sounds terrible (as in tortured). Don't use this feature as a sales point. That comment aside, I...

    MOW Speeder

Now that's an interesting model - I fully expected to see a Fairmont or similar model by the subject name. Nicely detailed as well - I would have guessed HO if not for the track! Matt

    Recession Hurting Big $ Kits?

^^ This is a fact. I have maybe three years worth of projects stacked up around the basement (not that many kits - I just work slow!).

What era draws your attention the most?

I suspect that developing mobile / lighter weight television cameras and transmission technology was likely more difficult than developing the same for a static studio / transmission facility. I'll admit that is pure speculation though. Matt

    Layout Ideas

Trainiac, sorry for the brief interruption, but this caught my eye. I'm also planning a new layout and have not considered, not am I very familiar with the module concept (beyond what I've seen at train shows). Any good links someone can point me to? Back to your regular program... Matt

    Head to head

I took this photo while experimenting with some radius questions (see post in layout planning) and just found it... cool. My favorite locomotives and a hopper (unstaged, actually) clear in the background - it looks... hmm. Purposeful?

    The Planning Summit

I finally had a chance to try this this past week. I set up three curves - 26", 30" and 35". The first picture was simply to see the relative "look" of the same locomotive side by side on the three radii. The second two are taken on the 35" and it's clear that I would have a very low success...

    Why?

That alignment hasn't changed over the years, though the right of way *looks* better now... (especially the NS / NYC side!) Nice pictures, did you take these? If so, what year? Matt

What era draws your attention the most?

Good grief, can you imagine having to scrape and paint that gingerbread? THAT would be somewhat time consuming! During my K-36 courting period, my free-lancish concept was to assume that the narrow gauge Springfield, Jackson and Pomeroy (later DT&I) remained narrow gauge into the 20th...

    Why?

Squidbait, thanks for the link - I was looking for maps prior to responding last night and had forgotten about the rails and trails site. A couple observations: Brakie, a while back I believe we may have exchanged photos of the T&OC depots in Columbus and Bucyrus. I was following the NYC...

    Why?

Hmm. I'll have to poke around down there. I'm familiar with the N&W and old HV / C&O just south and east of there, but not so much with the NYC. Matt

    Puddlejumper's (lack of) layout progress...

Squidbait offers good advice. A tripod has made my model photos MUCH easier - one of those tools that you'll wonder how you did without. Even if your camera doesn't allow for much manual adjustment, you'll be happier with the results simply by turning the flash off and allowing the camera to...
