    speed limits in yards

Really, Why do you think that? C

    Which way?

CP's original GP 7's and 9's indeed did run long hood FW. When Rebuilt and the short hood chopped, they became short hood leading. CP's RS10's and RS18's however are a different matter. Externally similar RS10s an earlier model was set up long hood FW while RS-18s always led short hood. C

    Dwarf Signal Lights.

Really, Ever heard of the Nickel spur? Signaled yard tracks are quite common. While the vast Majority of the Nickel spur is other than main track a small portion where this track gains entry to the Cartier Sub is signaled through a cross-over track. IIRC the best indication for a westbound...

    Need help with operations

Don't forget a staging area. Very few layouts can make do without some form of staging. If the same cars are being transferred back and forth from the yard, it could quickly become very dry indeed. Are you basing your layout on a prototype or do you have creative license? I ask because...

    Layout 101

Kutler indeed lives in Canada, but feels the need to have a US PO box for good reason  One of the reasons I've waited so long to get into DCC seems to be evident in these posts. There is no clear leading system, passions are high and loyalties might just result with systems becoming...

    capacitor?

Multiple Unit Applications Those of us in the diesel age are most familliar with more than one locomotive operating with MU capability. Rather than add capacitors to units usually MUed, would linking the units together electrically , temporarily be feasible? Could wires tiny enough linked...

More about DCC I'm convinced of the merits of building with DCC from the start. I feel it'll be more than a few years before I'll decide which manufacturer to go with a serious system. My question now is , in the interim is there a low end DCC system I might find useful for debugging my...

Major yard as theme of layout?

Don't forget to model the East and South Transfer tracks at Romford, located to the south and north of the main tracks. As Romford was a Junction, a great deal of traffic is exchanged here by through trains heading for Montreal or Toronto with blocks or single cars for the other direction...

    Layout 101

This comment has me more concerned than anything else. Does the technology yet exist or is it on the verge to eliminate this basic problem? Can a capacitor or battery be integrated into a locomotive to overcome momentary losses of power? C

    Layout 101

While I'm certain there must be benefits to building a small layout to gain experience with new technology, I can't find it working for me. My issues are of long trains, proto switching, and selective compression. In 8 X 10 layouts long trains cannot be operated, switching is limited, and...

    Layout 101

Born in TO, I once obtained extensive information on cars handled through the terminal in 1961. My job once involved knowing the railroad around HO, I mean Orangeville. I once rode the wayfreight up the grade to Fraxa, very exciting.

It seems there are at least two types of hump yards. The conventional being that which gets lots of advertising from the rail companies themselves; Retarders, pulldown towers, long hump leads etc. The lesser known type of hump is the "rider" hump. Once common in the era before electronics...

Orangeville: Interestingly, It was Orangeville I was preparing to model. In the 1975 era it was unfortunately not a bustling place. The passenger trains were gone. The branch jobs were abolished and their work performed by road freights making a side trip effectively reducing crew starts. The...

    Layout 101

Greetings: I've recently obtained a suitable sized basement to proceed with plans for a layout of about 25' X 40' in size. Interestingly it's been so long since I've operated on a layout I've forgotten some basic points. I'm interested in building a circa 1975 layout generic in nature in...

    Alternate VIA loco paint schemes?

Does anyone remember if VIA rail was simply unveiled or were there several different variations and the worst (or most garish) one selected?,, Most folks remember the RS-10 version applied to one unit or the grey and yellow F-unit mid 80's , but I'm referring to the genus of via. I'd be...

Major yard as theme of layout?

Sagianaw I've been there! What a neat place in the 80s. GP-30s in Chessie and B&O schemes. Shortlines with Alcos everywhere. I don't recall the CR yard. It must have been quite small by comparison? CSX sure was in Saginaw in a big way. Thanks for that view of the yard, it's pretty unique.

    Are your trains an escape?

Mental Disorder I never got to the national this year, but one of the more interesting titles for a clinic was "Is model railroading a mental disorder?" Did anyone catch that clinic? Regards Kutler

    Mainline spacings

Interesting, on my prototype the track centers are 14 feet between main tracks and 15 feet between main track and a siding. Yard track spacing is only 13.5. I don't know what that is in scale, but I bet it's less than the 1 13/16ths as per NMRA RP. There's probably a good reason why RPs were...
