Soldering 40+ pin connectors is not what I would call fun, and that is for connectors that are actually designed to have wires soldered to them. You would have to solder wires to connectors that are designed to be soldered into printed circuit boards, which means you would have to solder a wire...

Google Earth says 44 miles, Palo Alto to Felton. I figure about an hour to get there, maybe a tad more. Coming back would depend on how much beach traffic there is out of Santa Cruz this time of year.

It is posssible for reversible mechanisms to bind in one direction and run freely in the other. Worn brushes might also be the cause, if they make decent contact in one direction of rotation, but not the other. I would take it apart and have a look.
