    special effects experiment

I disagree. It isn't on any of the Windows machines in this house, for example, and it isn't on any of the Windows machines at my wife's place of employment, where she is a Systems Administrator. In fact, it seems to mostly be installed on developer's machines, some, but not all business...

If I had posted this link on April 1, no one would have taken it seriously, so I thought it best to wait. announce1 Famous But Little Known Locomotives And Their Designers

I just took a look at the Paint.net web site, and found that it requires your computer to have .NET Framework 2.0 installed. Googling .NET Framework 2.0 AND problem got lots of hits. I think I'll pass.

    Model Railroading Unlimited?

I have recently purchased a number of the Kalmbach model railroading "books." Book is a generous term for these publications. They are mostly a collection of loosely related articles written for Model Railroader at different times by a number of different authors. Those not written by one person...

    Can't find my sign!

According to Trains.com, some roads used a "P" sign mounted on the mast to indicate a permissive signal.

    Can't find my sign!

Each road seems to have had its own ideas regarding how its signage should look. Some used angled speed limit signs. The Milwaukee Road had speed limit signs like those shown in the scan: post end cut on an angle to match the post, while the free end was cut off square.

    ??? about doodlebugs.....

Doodlebugs could trail one or maybe two coaches, but I'm pretty sure RDCs can be MUed (Multiple Units) like modern diesel locos, while, to my knowledge, doodlebugs weren't capable of that.

Atlas Bumpers, what to do with the hole?

LEDs need current limiting resistors in series with them, or they let the smoke out, as you found out. Their brightness will vary with the track voltage. You have to size the resistor for maximum track voltage, BTW. There are ways around the varying brightness bit, but some minimal electronic...

    Wiring Automatic Crossing for DCC

Without knowing anything about the items, other than what is in your post, I would say you need to acquire one or more DCC block occupany detectors (BOD) and trigger the crossing signal from the BODs output, perhaps via a relay between them.

Ok, what's the big idea here?

Interesting and useful information I've not heard before. When you refer to car length in this case, is the measurement made from end sill to end sill, or between coupler faces? Between end sills, I imagine.

    ??? about doodlebugs.....

I can't recall ever seeing a double ended Doodlebug (Gas Electric Railcar), although some may have been built. Also, they sometimes pulled trailer coaches, so I would think they were generally turned on a loop, wye, or turntable, perhaps backing until they got to the closest available place...

    Dremel Stylus

Thanks for mentioning that. I would like to pick one of those up. Any idea how long that sale lasts? Lowes -- or anything else, for that matter -- is a long drive for me, and I don't want to make a special trip, if I don't have to.

Something to "dock" on your creek

That 'crane' may actually be a small dragline. I can't tell for sure because the tug is blocking the view. Draglines are used to dig and maintain navigable channels.

Awww, I was gonna say something like changing engine types and directions, etc. Then I thought no, I really shouldn't crack wise, but I see I was wrong. :D It would have been interesting to see the "before" pics along with the "afters."
