Wiring LED's for the first time.

It doesn't actually matter which lead the resistor is soldered on, I'd lean toward putting it on the return, since there will not be anything else on that line, but there could be other wires to the common. But that's a lit to pick. As long as the common is on the + side of the LED you are...

I'd say that by the time you've done all that, you might as well have bought a cheap power pack.

I really think a throttle is going to be the way to go. You could use another DC source, but there's no telling what voltage you'd really like that source to be. I think I'd run two cords in, one for the lights, and one for the train, with a switch on the cord for the train.

I find that there is a big difference in the whole feeling of New England urban areas and Western ones. Part of it is the buildings, but part of it is the spacing, and the general layout. The New England are much more European feeling, narrower streets, things closer together, roads at odd...

    Help with a layout design

The one Nomad marked is the one I would get rid of for sure. I'm not sure I'm thrilled with the other one either. Jeff

    Help with a layout design

If we are talking about the same place, yes! Let it stew a bit. Some of the most interseting ideas seem to come when I am not thinking about it!

    Help with a layout design

I enjoy doing this, I wouldn't do it if I didn't want to! It's just a balancing act between all things I want to do, and the ones I have to do! There is a lot to like in that setup. I think it has to be a grade crossing, which is too bad, because I'd want to get the two scenes at the bottom to...

Modeler's license is a good thing! (And I can spell it either way, I lived over there for three years, and find some words impossible to spell!) Rather than trying to have the same terrain represent two very dissimilar areas, I'd be tempted to have two separate, distinct scenes on the...

    Help with a layout design

Here is kind of the shape I was thinking, and a way the mainline could get around. The pic is oriented like your original, open right and down. I'd put a double ended staging area at the far right, a bit below the track in front of it. The main would be hidden there, and just run straight...

    Help with a layout design

OK, I'm not expert, and remember, you paid nothing for this, so you can decide if it is worth what you paid, or not.... I don't know for sure which are you open sides, but it doesn't matter, no matter which way is to the open side you have your yards/switching areas more than two feet from the...

    Help with a layout design

The other things I've learned with N scale.... You don't need wide benchwork everywhere. Eighteen inches is a lot of space. Less really can be more. Sometimes the most important track is the one you leave out. It really helps give the feeling of space. Jeff I'll be happy to help as much...

    Help with a layout design

As far as single vs. double track, on a smaller layout double is generally better, since there isn't enough room to have enough or long enough passing tracks to make it workable. In this space, you could probably go either way. I know you say you've bought layout books, but have you bought...

    Help with a layout design

It really helps if you can count on being able to walk in the open area (including for operation), it's almost as good as having the area itself. It makes access much better. Let me think for a while, I might have an outline tonight. Jeff

    Help with a layout design

So, do I understand that the "open" areas cannot have layout in them, but can be walked in to access the layout?

    What model decoder

Atlas factory decoders are from Lenz, though I think at least some of them may be only produced for Atlas. As far as CVs, in general they are going to be by the standard: RP 9.2.2 Configuration Variables They required ones will be there, others may not. I have heard, without confirmation that...

    N scale radius question

If you can get the curves up to 14.5 inches or more you are getting close to being able to run anything, though there may be issues in looking at it. So you disguise the sharpests turns, and have nice pretty cosmetic curves where you can see them. Here is a link: NMRA RP-11 Curvature &...
