    HO in cramped apartment

The absolute tightest curve you can run is 15", but that is almost never used except for tight sidings. 18" is more the norm for a very tight curve, but that can cause problems with things more than 40' long, including Proto RDCs, almost any SD, pasesenger cars, intermodal cars, etc. If you want...

    Help!

Another very good book is "Track Planning for Realistic Operations" by John Armstrong, also available from Kalmbach. Certainly the best money that I ever spent . . .

    More sad news: Dave Lisabeth

Dave was a good friend of mine, and this is a great tragedy. Condolences to his family. Scott Fraser Calgary

    My first train set...........

You scored big. Turnouts are expensive. i can't comment on the rolling stock without looking at it more closely — you will probably want to upgrade with Atlas or Proto trucks and Kadee couplers. Not at all familiar with the locomotive. I do think you might want to look at replacing the...

    Starter Set Question

Well, you're way ahead of the curve, friend. I would put all thoughts of electric trains out of your mind for at least eight years. When he hits three or four, he's ready for something from Brio or Fisher Price. Something that's important to emphasise is that for a developing mind...

look for source of Can Pacific steamers

Hate to tell you this, but there's very little RTR for Canadian locomotives of any sort. This is the best place to ask: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cpsig This is another good resource: http://www.cpsig.ca/cpdocs/main.asp The CP SIG has a quarterly magazine that is also very...

    Help choosing a small switcher.....

There was an article in RMC a few years about bashing one N scale. http://www.carstens-publications.com/backiss/rm_0401.html Here are more photos: http://aboutmodelrailroads.com/base/0107/Cheyenne/010714WY-SW10.html Basically very simple — take an SW1200 and graft the back corner...

    Help choosing a small switcher.....

The SW10 can be bashed in the same manner as UP did it — start with an SW 12 and graft on the radiators from a GP9. http://www.the-gauge.com/showthread.php?t=22446 There haven't been any new switchers made in ages, so the Proto SWs are good choices. Those that have maintained them still use...

    TH&B freight cars

The 2816 is used by CP for railfan trips across the country. Based in Calgary, it usually runs to Ontario at least once each summer, and to Vancouver a coupe of times each year. She's a beauty. Curiously, she usually travels with a GP38-2 painted in the original grey/maroon scheme.

A day in the CN yard

NREX 1284 has an interesting history. Delivered as UP 1229 (SW9) it was rebuilt into an SW10 and renumbered as UP 1284, then sold to CP as CP 1284 and finally to NRE.

    Caboose question

In Canada, cabooses were assigned to depots and "owned" by the crew. For example, a train travelling west from Edmonton woul change crews in Hinton, a new caboose would be switched and the first caboose would go back to Edmonton with the crew while the train carried on with a new crew, and new...

    New Guy

If you're wrestling with doorways, you might consider going to modules — 2' x 4' sections that connect with each other. They are easy to transport, generally not too heavy, and (if you adopt the standards) can be disassembled and reassembled in different order to give a new look to your layout...

    Need Help with 2 engines

Check out my response to "Quick Question" below. When it comes to locomotives, it is well worth spending the money to get a good one. It baffles my why manufacturers, who one would think would want to draw people into the hobby, peddle cheap "trainset" locomotives that are unreliable and...

    A Quick Question

Not a quick question at all. I'd like to make some suggestions. Firstly, search the archives of this forum. This question, and similar questions, have been asked before by newcomers to the hobby. Many members, myself included, have gone to some lengths to respond to such questions, to...

    Kaslo Shops Products????

You will find the F59PH is pretty good. There is some effort required in bending the handrails and grabs, but the shell is accurate. I know this because I did the drawings for the instructions, looked through over 250 photos of GO Train and Metrolink units, measured the test castings with...

How to best use this room??

Here's another thought. Put some elbows in your water line just below the ceiling. Move it as close to the wall as the meter will allow. Move the meter well above the layout, and angle it so you (they) can see it easily. Make sure you can reach the cutoff easily. Chop the pipe going into the...
