Well, back from a long day in the BIG city doing some Christmas shopping.....and a little shopping for my self as well;) ;) ;) .
Tried Hobby Lobby for wood, but I found out that they are closed on Sundays to allow their employees time to worship. Not a very financially wise decision on their...
A little progress
I just don't seem to have the time at the moment to devote a lot of energy to this first project.
Between not knowing what I want to do, not knowing how to do things, not having the material when I decide what I want to do, my d@#% job, X-mas shopping, etc.., it's a wonder...
kettlestack - Thanks for the tip, I'll search something like that out next time I get into town. I also believe there is a wood supplier in town that specializes in hardwood, I'll check there too.:p :p
Bill - I've also thought about using my small benchtop bandsaw for cutting the lumber, but the problem I forsee is the blade thickness. Bandsaw blades are much thicker than scroll saw blades and would waste more material. But I'll certainly give it a try and see if the results are at least...
Back in the days of my model building youth I got in the habit of painting everything that was a different color before gluing. I'm pretty new to scratchbuilding MR stuff but I'll probably adopt the same philosophy as well.
If you think telling people you're a model railroader is an experience, try telling them that you also collect stamps, that you like to draw and paint a little, that you're a musician, and that you grew up with parents who were dealers of miniature dollhouse furniture.......especially around...
Frozen???, What's this frozen word you speak??
Just do like I do, remove all unnecessary household furniture (chairs, sofa, tables, etc...) and replace it with funstuff (woodworking tools, hobby things, stereo equipment, etc...)
Wow!, great and innovative minds must think alike:D :D :D
I was thinking all night, while at work, on how I could rip thin strips of wood using my scroll saw. I got home, taped a long metal ruler 1 N-scale foot from the blade, found a sheet of 1/32" thick basswood and turned the machine on...
drew - I checked out that website and it looks like a good price for what it is. Unfortunately, what I need is thinner than the 1/32" sheets. The scale lumber I have been getting is about 2mm wide by...well, it's thinner than a piece of poster board yet not quite as thin as a piece of paper ("N"...
I've got a multi-part quesrtion for those who have been around the scratchbuilding block:
When you are working on a project and you run out of a certain size wood you need, or other materials, and you can't acquire what's needed for a while, do you:
1. Continue working and improvise with...
Since I'm only in the "idea" part of this hobby right now (haven't done much hands-on work), I've also thought about this:
can acrylic colors be added to the plaster mix? I did something similar by adding a small amount of black acrylic to white spackle, resulting in a grey finish.
Maybe...
David, nice looking mockup!
So that's how you guys start your structures, make a cardboard one first. I've always been a "measure once, and keep cutting until it's right" kind of person. Probably why I've always got gaps and non-fitting parts.
I'll have to try a little preparation next...
Here is the latest picture of my project.
I decided to get the abutments settled first before doing the scenery. But, in able to do that I felt the need to at least get the flooring portion of the covered bridge finished in order to get the abutment placing right.
Here is the semi-finished...
Tyson - The only thing I have to compare the Life-Like E8 with are old (10+ years) Bachmann engines that I have. But, after running it up and down on a straight piece of track, I am very pleased with it's performance. N-sale technology sure has advanced.
absnut - I believe you hit it on the head. The crummy performance, no details on the trucks, wheelies over turnouts, etc... This is all the stuff I remember when it was in running condition.
The problem now is that that page refers to them as being "very rare", so my hopes of being able to...
Wow!, them are some great sites!
Amazing what the net can hold. I just kind of got into all this and just about anything you need, as far as information goes, can be found on here.
Unfortunately I didn't find exactly what I was looking for and the Frisco page doesn't look like it is...
