    What color ballast?

I did get some Arizona "Pink Lady" ballast, both the fine and mainline. It looked a little too buff or tan for what I was looking for. Then I realized the granite on the tracks around here all comes from the New Ulm quarry - just 20 miles away. I made a trip and got boat loads of free...

    Athearn Auto-Max cars are out

I have one (or do you call it two?). It requires very wide turns to work properly though - 30 inch radius is ok but even 28" is tight. They are cool though if you have long runs.

    DCC idea for multi engines

I have the MRC Prodigy system and run trains with no less than two engines in consist and often with 4 or 5 - katos and Proto 2Ks, modern diesels - I have to put them back into a consist each time I power off the system but it only takes about 10 to 15 seconds to lash up 5 engines. It goes like...

    Rotary Couplers info!

I don't know much at all about this but I do know it would be bad to have the non-rotary coupler connected to the engine and then rotate the car! Bad, very bad.

Need help with a rail traffic generatiing system

I'm not sure I want products from "La Roche Ma_ufacturing" - they might leave out an important part. ;-) Honestly though, I like your idea though. Sounds like you have a limit on the length of train you want to run so you'll need to limit the number of draws you do to avoid the big trains...

    What color ballast?

I'm sure many of you have eyeballed lots of model railroad roadbed. I'm ballasting a bunch of yard and mainline track and want to make a good choice for the color of ballast I use. The track is all Atlas code 100 flex that has been weathered a flat, dark brown. I would love to ballast my...

    How to

I like the photo - gave me an idea - model thick green brush right down to the water's edge and you don't need much for shoreline detail. Hmmmm.

I clicked your link and had to fend off six or seven pop-ups - I felt like I was swatting flys.

Trouble with Hobbyshop www order . . .

The 1stPlace Hobbies order came the other day - all as I wanted - very nicely packed and the communication with them was great. My on-line banking service shows I was credited for the items not sent by Hobby Circle so all is well. As far as Bricks and Mortor versus online retailers - each...

    Trees 1-2-3

Very nice trees - I find myself wondering the craft isles frequently looking for things that might work for less money - great idea on cutting the snow off!

Trouble with Hobbyshop www order . . .

My issue with HC may be resolved. As directed by CidChase above, I dealt with Jim at HC and he phoned me twice today and stated he would credit my card for the 5 that did not ship - I'm sure I'll find some place to use the 3 right hand turnouts that I received in error. I told Jim about the...

    Bridge Pier Project

I guess I haven't posted what this is all a part of yet. I have the whole basement for my trains - we live in a 130 year old farmhouse - the basement is a little moist and the headroom is low so it's not good for much else (yeah!). Here are some pics of how things are coming together - this...

    Bridge Pier Project

These are not modern bricks - you can pound nails in them, cut them with a sawzall, and in this case, carve them with an old jig saw blade. They are softer than soft sandstone. Jimmy, I did hit the light colored joints with my favorite substance for griminess - the ground up pencil lead in...

    Bridge Pier Project

Soft brick - extras from a basement wall that had to go to make room for more trains. It's the very soft brick from way back - cut the blanks on the chop saw, then carved them. I did tame down the brightness of the joints with some ground up pencil lead and a small paint brush - I'm more...

    Bridge Pier Project

I'm always looking for ways to model RR stuff with scrap. These are "scaled" for HO - the final is a mock up, the piers will go elsewhere. I did note that the joint lines I carved are very large and the coloring doesn't quite capture what I was looking for. Oh well, I just hope to get...

Trouble with Hobbyshop www order . . .

Thanks everyone - great help, great service - just what I was looking for. I do patronize my LHS but they stock very little of what I need and I always feel guilty asking for a discount on my big orders (usually in excess of $100) - oh well. I contacted my card company and I used one of the...

Trouble with Hobbyshop www order . . .

I ordered several peco ho code 100 turn outs from Hobby Circle in Brooklyn, NY via their website over two weeks ago. I first became concerne when I couldn't indicate insulfrog vs. electrofrog and left hand vs. right hand. After placing my order I immedately emailed them referencing my order...

    Kit Builder's Library

Hey, I just did a search on "Single-track truss bridge". It is the name on the box of a Walther's kit I'm currently building. I thought maybe I would find some notes from a previous builder on things to watch out for or cool things folks did to enhance/bash the kit. I found nothing. I...
